Be warned, this article reveals spoilers from Dark Winds season 4, episode 4! The episode included a subtle tribute to the late Robert Redford. Dark Winds has a history of honoring those who have passed away, having previously memorialized assistant director Joe Buffalino III in season 3 and makeup artist Taylor Roberts in season 4.
While Dark Winds often honors people after each episode, this week’s episode included a more subtle tribute to Robert Redford, who passed away in September 2025. Many viewers might not realize how significant Redford was to the show—and vice versa.
Dark Winds Season 4, Episode 4 Features A Movie Theater Screening Jeremiah Johnson
During season 4, episode 4 of Dark Winds, as Chee leaves Sonny Bear Heart’s club, a movie theater across the street briefly appears in the background. The marquee shows that it’s playing Jeremiah Johnson, the 1972 Western starring Robert Redford. Since Dark Winds is set in the early 1970s, this would have been a recently released movie within the show’s story.
Robert Redford starred in Jeremiah Johnson, a character inspired by the real-life mountain man John “Liver-Eating” Johnson. The film follows Johnson, a former soldier who seeks a peaceful life as a fur trapper in the Rocky Mountains. However, his solitude is disrupted when he becomes caught up in conflicts between settlers and Native American tribes like the Crow, Blackfoot, and Flathead.
Many consider Jeremiah Johnson to be among Robert Redford’s finest films, and one of his best Westerns, surpassed only by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. This makes it a fitting choice to honor Redford and his impact on the Western genre. The film’s portrayal of Native Americans also reflects Redford’s commitment to supporting Native American artists and filmmakers, a theme central to the show Dark Winds.
Robert Redford Was An Executive Producer For Dark Winds & Made A Cameo In Season 3
The mention of Robert Redford and the film Jeremiah Johnson in Dark Winds season 4, episode 4 was more than just a tribute. Redford was heavily involved with the show as an executive producer, and he was instrumental in getting it made. He even appeared briefly in season 3, playing an inmate alongside fellow executive producer George R.R. Martin.
Redford’s involvement with Dark Winds actually goes back much further than the recent series. He was a huge fan of Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn and Chee novels and first acquired the rights to adapt them into films in 1988. For decades, he worked to bring the stories to the screen, managing to produce the 1991 film The Dark Wind and three television movies, though it wasn’t an easy process.

I was amazed to learn it took Robert Redford 33 years to get Dark Winds made, ever since he first acquired the rights to the Leaphorn and Chee novels! I understand a big part of the struggle was that this story centers Native American people – both in front of and behind the camera. Redford has even said it was hard to get studios to invest because the show features Native American actors, directors, and crew as its core.
Robert Redford’s appearance in season 3 of Dark Winds turned out to be his last acting role, as he had previously announced his retirement in 2018. Considering how much Dark Winds meant to Redford, it was a nice touch for the show to acknowledge his career with a nod to one of his classic Westerns. Though he’s no longer with us, Robert Redford’s impact on Dark Winds and the world will be lasting.
