Okay, so as a critic, I have to say the latest trailer for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 just dropped a huge bomb. We knew Krysten Ritter was coming back as Jessica Jones, and she’d been teasing a big shift for her character. Everyone was guessing it might involve a child, and well, the trailer just confirmed it! She literally says, “My daughter.” It takes all the mystery out of it, honestly, but it’s definitely a major development we’ll be seeing play out.
It’s still unknown when Jessica Jones will appear in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, with four episodes already released. This appearance is expected to be a major turning point for her character, drawing from her comic book backstory. Rumors suggest the reveal centers around Danielle Cage, Jessica’s daughter with Luke Cage, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed. This storyline is anticipated to have a significant impact not only on the current season of Daredevil: Born Again, but also on future seasons and the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Who is Jessica Jones’ Daughter, Explained
Danielle Cage is the daughter of Marvel superheroes Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. She’s named after Jessica’s close friend, Daniel Rand, also known as Iron Fist. The news of Jessica’s pregnancy first appeared in the last issue of her original comic series, Alias. Danielle was born in issue #13 of the follow-up series, The Pulse, which was released in January 2006. Following her birth, Luke Cage proposed to Jessica, and they later married in The New Avengers Annual #1 that same year.
Jessica Jones and Luke Cage have faced the challenges of raising a child while also being superheroes. When Luke joined The New Avengers, the family moved into Avengers Tower, which became home for their daughter, Danielle. They even hired Squirrel Girl to babysit! But life wasn’t always simple – during the Secret Invasion storyline, a Skrull disguised as the Avengers’ butler attempted to kidnap Danielle. Concerned for her safety, Jessica eventually moved herself and Danielle out of Avengers Tower. Despite the dangers they face, Jessica, Luke, and Danielle have remained a remarkably loving and stable family within the Marvel Universe.
Given that both of Danielle Cage’s parents have superpowers, many fans expect she’ll develop them too. However, the 2022 miniseries The Variants revealed she’s currently 3.5 years old and hasn’t shown any powers yet. Interestingly, in one alternate Marvel future (Earth-15061), a 30-year-old Danielle has become the new Captain America, inheriting both her parents’ super strength and invulnerability. Another version of Danielle appeared in the 2020 Captain Marvel: The End storyline, where she also gained her parents’ powers, took on a look similar to Captain Marvel, and married Lucy Rand, the daughter of Iron Fist and Misty Knight. While this doesn’t guarantee the main version of Danielle will get powers, it suggests it’s a possibility.
What Danielle Cage’s MCU Debut Means for the MCU
For years, Krysten Ritter and a Marvel producer have hinted at a significant new direction for Jessica Jones since her 2019 show ended. It’s surprising that Marvel might accidentally reveal this change now, especially since it would have been a big shock for fans when she joins the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recent set photos from the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again season seem to have spoiled another surprise: Mike Colter and Finn Jones are likely returning as Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
Currently, it doesn’t look like Mike Colter will reprise his role as Luke Cage in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. Given that the comics portray Luke Cage as the father of Jessica Jones’ daughter, fans are wondering what happened to him. We last saw Luke in the Jessica Jones Season 3 finale, where he was managing Harlem’s Paradise nightclub and essentially acting as an unofficial protector of the neighborhood. The show ended with a hint that his newfound power could potentially lead him down a dark path.
The events of Luke Cage Season 2 happen in 2017, while Jessica Jones Season 3 is set in 2018. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 takes place in 2027, which is almost ten years after Luke Cage was last seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Considering Luke Cage still manages Harlem’s Paradise and has ties to the criminal world, Jessica Jones might have taken their daughter to protect her from that life. Knowing Luke Cage’s character, he’d likely prioritize his family’s safety. Alternatively, Luke Cage could have been arrested by Fisk’s team targeting vigilantes and is now imprisoned – perhaps in a Damaged Control facility or even the Raft, where Trish Walker, Jessica’s adopted sister, is already held.
The nine-year difference in timelines also makes us wonder how old Danielle Cage is within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since Season 3 of Jessica Jones happens right before Avengers: Infinity War, it’s likely Danielle was born after Thanos eliminated half of all life. But what happened to her parents? Were they among those who disappeared, and when exactly was Danielle born? Or did her parents survive Thanos’ attack and, amidst the chaos, start a family during the five-year period shown in Avengers: Endgame?
Jessica Jones’s life takes a new direction in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the introduction of her daughter. Krysten Ritter’s portrayal of Jessica established her as a solitary character, but becoming a mother will likely force her to prioritize someone else’s well-being, something she hasn’t done before. Considering her difficult relationships with both her biological mother and adopted sister, she’ll probably strive to create a more secure and loving family. If Jessica Jones gets a revival series like Daredevil: Born Again, it will be fascinating to see how this change is explored. One possibility is introducing Milana Vayntrub, known for Project Hail Mary, as Danielle Cage’s babysitter – and as Squirrel Girl, a role she was previously cast for in an unreleased New Warriors pilot.
Danielle Cage has the potential to become a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for many years to come. We could see her grow up across different movies and shows, eventually becoming a superhero herself, perhaps even as a teenager or young adult. There’s even a possibility she could become the next Captain America after Anthony Mackie finishes his role, mirroring her comic book future. This would be a powerful way to show how the MCU can continue for decades, with the Captain America shield representing its lasting legacy and passing of the torch to new generations.
As a huge MCU fan, it’s so cool to think that in twenty years, these movies will still be happening! And it’s amazing that a character who first showed up on Disney+ – like Daredevil – could end up leading their own film. The trailers for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 hinted that Jessica Jones has a daughter, and honestly, that just feels like the start of something really big for both of them. I can’t wait to see where their stories go!
