Daniel Radcliffe Gives Honest Feedback on The Devil Wears Prada Harry Potter Scene: ‘Good Luck’

It might seem strange to connect The Office and The Devil Wears Prada, but the 2006 film actually included a storyline referencing Harry Potter.

In the movie The Devil Wears Prada, Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly, famously asks her assistant, Andy Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway), to obtain an early copy of the next Harry Potter book. Recently, Daniel Radcliffe shared his thoughts on this scene during an interview on Bustle’s One Nightstand podcast, also revealing how the cast reacted at the time.

Harry Potter Actors Didn’t Have the Privilege of Early Copies

The actor talked about the Harry Potter books, explaining they sparked his love of reading, just like they did for many kids. He mentioned reading the first two books before the first movie came out in 2001, and then reading the next one after he was cast as Harry Potter. When asked if he and his co-star had early access to the books, he said, “No, we had to wait for release day like everyone else.”

He mentioned the movies The Devil Wears Prada and Harry Potter, recalling a scene in The Devil Wears Prada where the character had to find an early copy of the then-unpublished Harry Potter. He said everyone watching at the time thought it would be nearly impossible.

Miranda was hoping to get either Half-Blood Prince, published in 2005, or Deathly Hallows, the final book in the series released in 2007.

Daniel Radcliffe isn’t the only Harry Potter actor to comment on the storyline; his co-star, Bonnie Wright (who played Ginny Weasley), also explained why it wouldn’t be realistic. Back in 2011, Wright told Nylon magazine that the most annoying thing she’d ever seen in a movie was when characters in The Devil Wears Prada got Harry Potter books before they were released. She said she couldn’t believe it, because that would ‘never, ever, ever happen!’

She described J.K. Rowling as very private and controlling of information, always wanting everything revealed simultaneously. Even translators around the world didn’t receive the books until they were already available for purchase, ensuring no details were leaked beforehand.

Wright explained that all of the actors – including Dan Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and the entire cast – had to wait their turn, just like the fans.

One Harry Potter Star Had Vital Information on the Series

Daniel Radcliffe shared that the publisher was extremely careful to keep plot details secret, worried about spoilers. However, J.K. Rowling did share some information with one cast member: Alan Rickman. Radcliffe remembers Rickman was the only one who received any advance notice, while he, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and the rest of the cast were kept completely in the dark.

It’s not exactly a secret, but J.K. Rowling shared a cool detail about working with Alan Rickman. She apparently let him in on Snape’s backstory – the real reasons behind his bitterness – pretty early on. She confirmed she told him all about Snape’s issues with James Potter, explaining that’s why he carried that animosity and ultimately projected it onto Harry. It’s amazing to think Rickman was playing with that knowledge the whole time, adding layers to his performance that only he fully understood!

The Harry Potter franchise now continues with a new adaptation, the HBO series, while .
