As a huge movie fan, I was really excited to hear Dan Aykroyd, the brilliant mind behind Ray Stantz in Ghostbusters (and one of the creators of the whole thing!), hinting at what’s next for the franchise. Now, Ghostbusters isn’t the cultural phenomenon it once was, but it still has a dedicated following. It sounds like the people running things now are hoping to recapture that magic with another sequel, and honestly, I’m cautiously optimistic!
Dan Aykroyd recently appeared on the Talking Strange podcast to discuss the third season of his show, The Unbelievable With Dan Aykroyd. Of course, the conversation turned to Ghostbusters. When asked about what’s next for the franchise, Aykroyd hinted that fans will likely see more adventures with the ghost-hunting team soon.
We’re definitely open to including elements like ‘pink slime’ if it fits the story. We’re planning another Ghostbusters movie, and we’re exploring different approaches. Considering the way people are behaving these days, it feels impossible not to address some of that in the film.
We’re exploring different possibilities, and it could involve some kind of negative force. I’m eager to see what Jason Reitman and the team at Ghost Corps in Los Angeles come up with.
The Ghostbusters movies have seen both success and failure. While the first film in 1984 was a big hit, and the 1989 sequel is often overlooked, the series went on a long hiatus from the big screen. When they tried to revive the franchise in 2016 with a new team of female Ghostbusters, the movie sparked a lot of controversy, and negative reactions unfortunately overshadowed the film itself.
The Ghostbusters franchise revisited its roots in 2021 with Ghostbusters: Afterlife, a sequel that pleased fans by bringing back original cast members and introducing a new generation of characters. However, 2024’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which featured both the classic team and the newcomers, didn’t resonate as well with audiences. For the franchise to move forward successfully, it needs to develop the story in new directions and rely less on familiar elements from the past.
Is the Future of ‘Ghostbusters’ Animated?
Dan Aykroyd recently discussed the future of Ghostbusters, mentioning that in addition to a potential new movie, an animated series is also being developed. This isn’t the first time the Ghostbusters have appeared in animation – many fans fondly remember the The Real Ghostbusters cartoon from the 1980s, as well as its spin-off, Extreme Ghostbusters. Aykroyd also hinted at some upcoming details about the new series.
We’re working on a fantastic animated Ghostbusters movie that will be released shortly. The characters, overall approach, and depiction of New York City are all very promising. I believe this project could give the writers a chance to explore and address important issues, helping us to move forward.
