After Elena Left, Damon Kept The Vampire Diaries Alive

Damon truly came into his own after Season 6. Previously, his storyline heavily revolved around Elena, but once she was gone, it became clear he was always the central figure of the show. The writers were then able to develop his connections with other characters, especially Stefan, in ways they hadn’t explored before.

Damon and Stefan were constantly at odds over Elena, and it wasn’t until she was gone that they finally started supporting each other. For the first time, they were able to face Lily’s reappearance and the complicated issues within their family together.

As Stefan’s storyline lost its spark, Caroline was given a complicated and unpopular pregnancy plot, and Matt’s time as sheriff felt repetitive and uninspired. Meanwhile, Damon, no longer focused on Elena, developed a strong connection with Bonnie – a relationship that arguably should have been romantic. This friendship grounded him and helped him stay true to himself after losing the woman he loved.
