It’s a Star Wars reunion!
Daisy Ridley first gained widespread recognition as an actor in 2015 with her role as Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the first film in Disney’s new Star Wars trilogy. While she appeared to finish her run with the series in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, she’s consistently worked in a variety of films, including the 2023 action thriller Cleaner.
According to Deadline, Ridley will be in a new movie called The Last Resort, set to be released by Vertical in 2027. She recently finished filming with Alden Ehrenreich, who is known for his roles in Oppenheimer (2023) and as the lead in the Star Wars film Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018).
Voltage Pictures will be selling the romantic comedy The Last Resort to international buyers at the Cannes Film Festival this month. The film, directed by Donald Petrie (known for How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), stars Elle Ridley as Brooke, a driven New York hotel executive sent to the Philippines to find a location for a new luxury resort. While there, she unexpectedly falls for a pilot, played by Ehrenreich, and must decide whether to prioritize her career or pursue a new life with him.
Joining the cast of The Last Resort alongside two Star Wars actors are Sam Neill, known for Jurassic Park; Tia Carrera, from Wayne’s World; Vondie Curtis-Hall, who appeared in The Recruit; Beck Bennett of Saturday Night Live; and Jo Koy, featured in Haunted Mansion. The screenplay is by Karen McCullah, a seasoned writer of romantic comedies, with previous credits including 10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde, The House Bunny, and The Ugly Truth.
Daisy Ridley received news about The Last Resort at a time when her involvement with the Star Wars universe was uncertain. In 2023, it was announced she would return as Rey in a new film, Star Wars: New Jedi Order, set several years after The Rise of Skywalker.
The new Star Wars movie, which Ridley was set to return to, has hit some roadblocks. The original screenwriter, Steven Knight, left the project in late 2024. While director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still involved as the film is being developed, there’s currently no confirmed release date.
Following the success of his role in last year’s Weapons and the blockbuster film Oppenheimer—where he played an assistant to Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.)— Ehrenreich had a busy 2023. He also appeared in Cocaine Bear and Fair Play.
While romantic comedies can be a gamble in theaters, the 2023 film Anyone But You proved popular, earning over $220 million worldwide. This shows that even though many people now watch these types of movies at home, audiences will still go to theaters if the movie appeals to them.
Whether The Last Resort does well in cinemas is still uncertain, but both Ridley and Ehrenreich are continuing to build impressive careers after their time in Star Wars. Now that the film is being shown at the Cannes market, we should learn more about its release plans soon.
