Today, the nominations for the 2026 Golden Globes were revealed. While some great films and performances were overlooked, many deserving artists were recognized. Cynthia Erivo is among them, earning her second nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her role as Elphaba Thropp in Wicked: For Good. This makes her the first Black actress to receive two nominations in this category, and she shared her excitement about the milestone on social media.
I just learned some exciting news – Cynthia Erivo, who’s incredibly dedicated right now rehearsing for a one-woman show in London where she’ll play every role in Dracula, responded to a piece in Variety about her Golden Globe nomination. Apparently, she’s the first Black woman to achieve this, and she shared her reaction on Instagram Stories. It’s a huge moment, and I’m eager to see what she had to say!

Okay, so I just read that Adam Sandler explained to Ariana Grande why his character slapping Elphaba (her character in Wicked) felt justified within the story. Honestly, as a huge Wicked fan, it’s really got me thinking and feeling all the feels – my heart is seriously swelling with emotions about it all! It’s a surprisingly complex discussion, and I’m already diving deep into what everyone’s saying.
With Elphaba’s ‘Sex Cardigan’ from the musical Wicked gaining attention online, I admire Cynthia Erivo’s insightful explanation of what the cardigan represents.
The Golden Globe Awards began in 1944, and it’s surprising it took over 80 years for a Black woman to be nominated twice for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy film. However, Cynthia Erivo absolutely deserves the nomination, and I’m hoping she wins! This comes after Denzel Washington made history last year, becoming the first Black actor to receive eleven Golden Globe nominations and winning two awards for his roles in ‘Glory’ and ‘The Hurricane’.
Erivo also used her Instagram Stories to share her reaction to the recent Golden Globe nomination. She specifically thanked director John M. Chu, who helmed both Wicked films, and her co-star Ariana Grande, who received another nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Glinda.
I’m so thrilled to receive this nomination from the Golden Globes! Playing this character has been an incredible experience, and this recognition is the perfect way to celebrate. I’m deeply grateful for the guidance of my director and ‘brother,’ Jon M. Chu, and the amazing support of producer Marc Platt. And a huge congratulations to my wonderful sister, Ariana Grande! Thank you, Golden Globes! 💚💚💚
Cynthia Erivo is up for an award this year alongside Rose Byrne (for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another), Amanda Seyfried (The Testament of Ann Lee), and Emma Stone (Bugonia). Even if she doesn’t win Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, based on last year’s results, she’s likely to be nominated for an Oscar for Wicked: For Good. While the second Wicked movie hasn’t received as much critical acclaim as the first, it’s been a box office success, earning over $440 million globally.
You can still see Wicked: For Good in movie theaters! If you haven’t yet, try to catch it before the 83rd Golden Globe Awards on January 11, 2026, which will air on CBS and be available to stream on Paramount+. It’s also currently available to watch with an Amazon Prime Video subscription.
