Community Writer Confirms Real Reason About the Movie’s Delay: ‘Do Not Be Upset’

Andrew Guest, the writer, shared the main reasons why the highly anticipated movie hasn’t been made yet. He revealed the project came close to happening, but ultimately fell through, and explained the challenges they faced.

Joel McHale recently talked about the long wait for a Community movie, which has been stuck in development for a while. He mentioned on The Watch podcast with Andy Greenwald that filming almost started, but the writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023 caused significant delays.

The Community Movie Almost Happened

With the writers and actors strikes wrapping up, the entire cast was free and eager to begin filming, according to Guest. They also had a line producer in place and had started revising the script.

One of our actors had a scheduling conflict with another project, which caused some issues. I don’t want to name that actor because the Community fans can be really critical, and I don’t want anyone to get unfairly upset or attacked. So, please Community fans, don’t blame anyone involved.

It’s challenging to get everyone together because the cast is incredibly talented and in high demand, especially due to their work on Community, Guest explained. We want to avoid a situation like the Netflix season of Arrested Development, where filming schedules kept the cast members separated. The magic of our show comes from the chemistry between the actors when they’re all together, so having everyone in the same place is crucial.

The show, created by Dan Harmon and co-written by Guest, centers around a quirky group of students who meet at the fictional Greendale Community College.

As a huge Community fan, I always loved the original cast – Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Donald Glover, Yvette Nicole Brown, Ken Jeong, Jim Rash, and Chevy Chase. It was fantastic to see Paget Brewster and Keith David become regulars alongside them when the show came back for its sixth season. They really rounded out an already amazing group!

Despite being considered by many as the show’s weakest season, Community received positive reviews from both critics and viewers throughout its six-season, 110-episode run. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes reports an 88% approval rating from both critics and audiences.

What the Stars of Community Have Said About the Feature Film Finale

As a longtime follower of Community, I’ve heard the call for “six seasons and a movie” echoed by the fanbase for years – it’s become something of a battle cry, really. But despite all the excitement, a movie has remained frustratingly out of reach. And honestly, every time I’ve asked the cast, the news hasn’t been encouraging. They seem just as eager for it to happen, but concrete progress feels…distant.

In July 2025, Brie Larson was asked about a potential Community movie. She responded that she didn’t have any information to share, explaining that the project is currently on hold. However, she noted that the cast is very enthusiastic about the idea and would be thrilled to work together again in the future, as they all have a strong bond.

Community is currently available for streaming on Netflix in the United States until Apr. 1.
