Colin Farrell will soon be appearing in another movie based on a comic book. This comes after his popular portrayal of the Penguin in both The Batman film and the highly-rated HBO series The Penguin, for which he received two Emmy nominations this year.
I just got a first look at the details for Ordained, and it sounds intense! Colin Farrell is set to star as a priest who isn’t exactly known for turning the other cheek – apparently, he has a pretty rough history. The movie’s based on a new comic book series of the same name, written by Robert Venditti and illustrated by Trevor Hairsine. The first issue drops on December 10th from Bad Idea Publishing, and honestly, I’m already intrigued.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson is joining forces with AGBO, the production company run by Marvel directors Joe and Anthony Russo, for a new action-packed movie. Derek Kolstad, who wrote the script for John Wick, is currently working on the screenplay.
In the upcoming series Ordained, Colin Farrell plays Father Roy Craig, a priest haunted by a hidden past. After hearing the confession of a mob boss—who surprisingly lives—Father Craig finds himself confronting a dangerous world of gangsters, crooked cops, and hired killers.
I found it fascinating how Father Craig, even when pushed to incredibly violent limits, consistently refused to take a life. It’s a really compelling internal struggle – he can fight back with serious force, but he’s absolutely committed to upholding the Biblical commandment against killing. It adds a surprising layer of morality to what could have been a purely action-driven character.
The Colin Farrell priest movie is expected to begin filming sometime in 2026.
Colin Farrell has a solid history with comic book films. Besides playing the mobster Penguin (Oswald “Oz” Cobb) in The Batman and the Penguin series, he previously played the villain Bullseye in the 2003 Daredevil movie, alongside Ben Affleck, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Jennifer Garner.
Farrell recently starred in two films: Ballad of a Small Player, which is available on Netflix, and A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.
The Best Superhero Movies Not From Marvel or DC

1. The Crow
The 1994 film The Crow, based on a popular comic book, tells the story of a musician brought back to life after being murdered on the eve of his wedding. Driven by grief, he seeks supernatural revenge on those who killed his fiancée. The movie is a dark, visually striking revenge fantasy filled with captivating action. It feels both timeless and distinctly ’90s, thanks to its gothic-rock style, industrial look, and memorable soundtrack. Sadly, The Crow is also remembered for the tragic on-set death of its star, Brandon Lee.

2. The Incredibles
Pixar’s The Incredibles, released in 2004, is a highly praised animated film set in a stylish, 1960s-inspired future. The story centers on a family of superheroes forced into hiding, who must come together to stop a villain determined to eliminate all supers. Beyond its exciting action, the movie offers a thoughtful look at themes like fitting in, the importance of family, and navigating the challenges of middle age, all while featuring characters audiences genuinely care about.

3. Chronicle
Released in 2012, Chronicle is a sci-fi thriller about three Seattle high school students who gain telekinetic and flying powers after finding a strange object in the woods. At first, they use their abilities for fun and to become popular, but things take a dark turn when one of them starts to become aggressive. The film cleverly combines the classic superhero origin story with a found-footage style and realistic teen drama, creating a gripping experience that pulls you into the characters’ emotional struggles and moral choices, ultimately leading to a spectacular and heartbreaking aerial showdown.

4. Sky High
Disney’s Sky High cleverly combines the familiar experiences of high school with the excitement of a superhero adventure. The film stars Kurt Russell as the Commander, a popular superhero, and centers on his son, a worried teenager who attends a special high school for superheroes – even though he doesn’t have any powers himself. Though released in 2005, Sky High has become a cult favorite, and many fans appreciate how innovative and fun it was for its time, playfully subverting typical superhero storylines.

5. Unbreakable
Released in 2000, Unbreakable is a unique film that blends the superhero genre with psychological thriller elements. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan – fresh off the success of The Sixth Sense – it stars Bruce Willis as an ordinary janitor who unexpectedly develops superpowers after a train accident. While the movie’s initial marketing didn’t highlight its comic book roots, it was still a commercial success and is now considered a standout superhero film.

6. Kick Ass
Dave, a regular high school student, decides to become a superhero called “Kick-Ass.” After a disastrous first attempt at crime-fighting, he undergoes surgery that gives him a partially metal skeleton and increased resilience. However, his actions attract the attention of a dangerous crime boss, as well as a former police officer who’s also a superhero, and his foul-mouthed young daughter, Hit-Girl.
The 2010 film, directed by Matthew Vaughn, is a darkly comedic and action-packed superhero movie with plenty of violence. (It’s worth noting that while the Kick-Ass comic originated with a Marvel imprint, the movie isn’t part of the official Marvel Universe.)

7. The Rocketeer
Disney’s The Rocketeer is a thrilling adventure based on a popular comic book. Set in the 1930s, it follows a daring stunt pilot who gains superpowers thanks to a unique rocket pack. He soon finds himself pursued by gangsters, FBI agents, and Nazis while uncovering a dangerous scheme connected to his incredible technology.
A loving tribute to the exciting action movies of the 1930s, The Rocketeer is filled with spectacular airships, stylish Art Deco designs, and the elegance of Old Hollywood. While the 1991 film wasn’t a box office success initially, critics praised it then, and it has since become a beloved cult classic.

8. Brightburn
What if Superman hadn’t been a hero? That’s the chilling question explored in the 2019 horror film Brightburn. The movie tells the story of an alien child raised on a farm who, after discovering his superpowers, starts down a dark and dangerous path. Produced by James Gunn, who would later direct Superman, Brightburn is most effective in its final, violent moments, and offers a compelling and suspenseful horror concept that’s worth watching.

9. Megamind
In this often-overlooked DreamWorks animated film, Will Ferrell shines as Megamind, a supervillain who’s both incredibly smart and hilariously clumsy. Once Megamind finally defeats his greatest enemy, he feels lost and decides he needs a new hero to fight. While some have said the story isn’t entirely new, Megamind is actually wittier and more entertaining than many realize. It’s a fun, family-friendly movie with a quirky, over-the-top mad scientist vibe – and the running gag about the “spee-ider” is still funny!

10. Darkman
Sam Raimi’s 1990 film, Darkman, is a unique blend of horror and superhero elements, and it stands out because of its original screenplay. The story follows a scientist, played by Liam Neeson, who is horribly disfigured and left for dead by criminals. He recovers and uses his own invention – a special mask-making technology – along with his fractured mental state, to exact revenge. Darkman combines intense, violent action with dark comedy, feeling like a bloody, animated comic book come to life.
