As a huge movie fan, I’m really excited to hear that Clint Eastwood’s classic Western, Pale Rider, is coming to Tubi! It’s been 40 years since it was in theaters, and it’s awesome that a film that broke records back then is now going to be available to stream for free starting November 1st.
In Pale Rider, Clint Eastwood plays The Preacher, a stranger who comes to a small Old West town plagued by a ruthless mining baron. The film draws a connection to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with Eastwood’s character symbolizing Death and arriving on a white horse. Like many Western heroes, The Preacher protects the town and its people. However, when the miners resist the baron’s unfair demands, the baron unleashes his men to eliminate The Preacher and anyone who supports him.
When Pale Rider came out in 1985, it was a huge success, earning over $41 million despite only costing $6.9 million to make. It was the first big Hollywood Western film after the disappointing performance of Heaven’s Gate in 1980, and ultimately became the most financially successful Western movie of the entire decade.
A well-known film critic from the 1980s gave Pale Rider a perfect four-star review, calling it “a classic Western of style and excitement” and a significant accomplishment overall.
I’ve always been a fan of Pale Rider, and it’s amazing to me that, even forty years later, people still love it! Critics are still giving it great reviews – I recently checked Rotten Tomatoes and it has a 94% approval rating. But it’s not just critics; regular moviegoers like me really enjoy it too, with an 83% rating from over 25,000 reviews. It really holds up!
Rotten Tomatoes reviewers generally loved the film, calling it a beautifully made and thoughtful Western. They noted it’s a return to the genre that launched Clint Eastwood’s directing career, and draws inspiration from the classic film Shane.
Eastwood Continues to Deliver Western Greatness Decades Later
Clint Eastwood started his acting career in the 1950s and became famous for starring in iconic Westerns like Unforgiven, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, The Outlaw Josey Wales, and High Plains Drifter. Even after Westerns became less popular in the 1960s, he continued to make them, and he recently returned to the genre in a noteworthy, though often overlooked, film in 2021.
Eastwood directed, produced, and starred in Cry Macho, playing a retired rodeo cowboy who is asked by an old friend to retrieve his son from Mexico. The pair then embark on a challenging trip back to Texas. While the film didn’t achieve the same popularity as Eastwood’s classic Westerns, it demonstrated his continued passion for storytelling, even at the age of 90.
Pale Rider heads to Tubi on Nov. 1.
