Throughout the history of film, certain actors have become iconic figures in Westerns. Clint Eastwood rose to prominence as the leading Western star after John Wayne, and the two later collaborated on a highly-regarded crime drama that stands out in its genre. For many years, John Wayne was considered the ultimate Western hero, but by the 1960s, Clint Eastwood had taken his place.
As the ’90s rolled around, Clint Eastwood started moving away from Westerns, and Unforgiven felt like his heartfelt farewell to the genre for a good while. Kevin Costner really stepped up to fill that void, and he’s carried the torch ever since. But in ’93, something special happened – Eastwood and Costner actually teamed up for a crime thriller, and honestly, it turned out to be a little gem of a movie.
Clint Eastwood & Kevin Costner Co-Starred In A Perfect World
By 1993, Clint Eastwood had just achieved major success with his critically acclaimed Western, Unforgiven, which many considered the last truly great film in the genre. He was beginning to explore different types of movies as a director. At the same time, Kevin Costner hadn’t made another Western since his 1990 hit, Dances With Wolves.
By 1993, Clint Eastwood’s star was fading while Kevin Costner was becoming a major actor, and the two decided to collaborate on a film. The result was the crime drama, A Perfect World, in which Costner plays Butch, an escaped convict who kidnaps a young boy named Phillip.
Clint Eastwood plays Red Garnett, the head of the Texas Rangers, on a mission to capture Butch. Red and Butch share a past – Red once sentenced Butch to a long prison term for stealing a car, which unfortunately led Butch down a path to becoming a more dangerous criminal. Ultimately, Red hopes to help Butch find a better way.
The film received positive reviews, particularly highlighting Clint Eastwood’s direction and Kevin Costner’s performance as a fugitive who unexpectedly becomes a guardian to the boy he kidnapped. However, it’s a largely overlooked crime drama that deserves more recognition.
Though the film wasn’t initially successful at the box office, critics have started to see it as one of Clint Eastwood’s best and most rewarding films as a director. In fact, the respected film journal Cahiers du Cinéma even called it the best movie of 1993, a year that also saw the release of popular and acclaimed films like Schindler’s List and Jurassic Park.
Eastwood Only Appeared In The Movie Because Costner Rewrote The Script
Clint Eastwood initially agreed to direct A Perfect World but didn’t plan to act in it. The script was written by John Lee Hancock, early in his career—before he became a director himself. He would later write and direct films such as The Rookie, The Alamo, and The Blind Side.
As a huge film buff, I always find it fascinating to learn about the behind-the-scenes stories of movies. Did you know that after Kevin Costner’s massive hit, Dances with Wolves, and Clint Eastwood’s critically acclaimed Unforgiven, the two actually collaborated on a project? It’s their only time directing together! Interestingly, Eastwood took on the directing job after Steven Spielberg decided to focus on Jurassic Park instead. It’s wild to think about how different film history could have been!
Eastwood agreed to cast Costner in the movie, but Costner hoped Eastwood would also star alongside him, thinking it would boost his own Western film career. Eastwood declined, so Costner decided to take a risk and started collaborating with the writer, Hancock, to expand the character of Red.
As a huge fan of the film, I always appreciated the subtle layers they added to Red’s character. Producer Mark Johnson mentioned they actually reworked things so Red had a real reason to be involved, something personal at stake. And Kevin Costner himself suggested a line for Laura Dern’s Sally – a small thing, but it helped show Red was searching for a way to make things right, making his motivations clearer and more compelling.
Eastwood explained he preferred a different role than the typical gunslinger. “I’d rather play something other than a character who just walks in and starts shooting,” he said, adding that those kinds of roles felt repetitive for him at this point in his career. He felt younger actors would be better suited for them. Fortunately, Kevin Costner’s work on the script convinced Eastwood to take on the role of Red.
The movie didn’t live up to expectations when it was released, and both Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood felt it wasn’t very good. This was particularly disheartening considering how well their previous Western films had performed.
Kevin Costner Proved To Be Clint Eastwood’s Successor In The Western Genre
Because A Perfect World didn’t perform well in theaters, Kevin Costner’s rise to become a leading Western actor, taking over from Clint Eastwood, was delayed. The following year, he starred in Wyatt Earp, but it wasn’t as successful as Tombstone, and ultimately became the less popular of the two films about the famous lawman.
But this was just the beginning of a rough patch for Costner. After finding success in sports movies during the 1980s, he started appearing in films that didn’t do well. His movies Waterworld (1995) and The Postman (1997) both failed to attract audiences and were big disappointments in theaters. It looked like his career was losing momentum.
Fortunately, things improved in the 2000s. In 2003, he directed and starred in the well-received film Open Range, which did reasonably well in theaters. He then achieved major success on television, starting with Hatfields & McCoys in 2012, followed by Yellowstone in 2018.
With films like The Highwayman in 2019 and Horizon in 2024, Kevin Costner established himself as the contemporary successor to Clint Eastwood in Westerns, even if he didn’t quite reach the iconic status of Eastwood or John Wayne.
