Fans excited for a trailer of the upcoming horror movie Clayface might have to wait a bit longer. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, recently shared an update suggesting a trailer isn’t coming very soon.
James Gunn responds to Clayface trailer question
James Gunn responded to fans on Threads who were eager for a Clayface trailer. He confirmed on January 18, 2026, that a trailer won’t be coming in the next few months, explaining that he hasn’t even seen a first cut of the movie yet.
That conversation led to more questions about how the movie was coming along. Gunn then explained why he hadn’t watched it yet, describing how post-production happens on projects he’s not directly directing, such as the Clayface scenes.
When asked if he generally gives directors space during the editing process, Gunn explained that producers typically step back during the director’s cut, noting it’s both the most effective approach and a standard practice according to the Directors Guild of America. He clarified that he doesn’t view the initial ‘assembly cut’ of a film, stating that directors are given the first opportunity to edit the footage over a period of roughly 11 to 12 weeks, after which producers will then see it.
Even though the trailer for The Clayface movie has been delayed, James Gunn has confirmed the film is still set to come out on September 11, 2026. He responded with a simple “Totally” when asked if the release date was still on schedule.
This change fits with James Gunn’s plan for a DC Universe that embraces a wide range of styles. He explained in a July 2025 interview with CBS Mornings that stories like Clayface could be like standalone horror movies, existing within the same universe as Superman but offering a completely different kind of experience.
Even though we haven’t seen a preview yet, it seems like work on Clayface is going well.
