As a huge movie fan, I’m incredibly excited about the upcoming Clayface film. Everything we’ve seen so far is both captivating and genuinely unsettling. But what’s really interesting is the ambiguity – it’s not clear if he’s a bad guy, a good guy, or something in between, and that makes the project even more compelling to me.
Expect a More Sympathetic Clayface, But Not For The Entire Movie
Harries readily identified the main character as either a hero or a villain. But a hint of inner struggle suggests an intriguing development, particularly for longtime Batman followers.
I really hope people connect with this character and find themselves cheering him on throughout the whole movie! The actor mentioned that things won’t be easy for him though – he anticipates his character will face some serious obstacles at a certain point. It sounds like there’s going to be a real turning point in the story.
The exact meaning remains to be seen, but audiences will likely learn more when the movie is released. It seems to hint at a darker side to the character. The previous version of Clayface, voiced by Alan Tudyk, was officially established as the same person we’ll see in this film – and that version was known for being aggressive and untrustworthy, ultimately committing a significant betrayal. Hopefully, this new portrayal of Matt Hagen avoids that fate, though his future role within the DC Universe is still uncertain.
Harries also talked about the depiction of Gotham City in the film, saying, “We’re thrilled to show how Gotham fits into the larger DC universe, and you’ll have to watch the movie to see exactly what we’ve created.”
Clayface Looks To Be Unlike Any Other Comic Book Movie Right Now
One thing is clear about the DC Universe: it embraces unique stories. The inclusion of Clayface demonstrates this perfectly. The upcoming film will be based on a compelling narrative, written by Hossein Amini and directed by James Watkins – known for his work on the 2024 remake of Speak No Evil and Eden Lake.
The movie will be based on the Matt Hagen storyline, while also incorporating some ideas from other versions. Hagen, played by Rhys Harries, is a rising actor who gets involved with a woman who is already in a relationship. When this affair is discovered, he suffers a brutal beating.
Desperate to restore his appearance, he seeks out Dr. Caitlin Corr (Naomi Ackie), a scientist working with untested methods, and volunteers for her experimental serum trial. As hinted in the trailers, the treatment goes terribly wrong, potentially making his condition far worse and endangering the entire city of Gotham.
Fans will find out if Clayface succumbs to his impulses when the movie premieres on October 23rd.
