Back to the Future becomes part of a coveted list following rerelease
After a special 40th anniversary showing in theaters, the classic film Back to the Future has become one of the top 200 highest-earning movies ever in the United States.
The popular 1985 science fiction movie made $4.9 million in North American theaters this weekend. With this latest success, its total earnings in North America have reached $220 million, and worldwide it has now grossed $393 million. This achievement moves the film to number 200 on the list of highest-grossing domestic films, taking the place of Mission: Impossible – Fallout (according to Collider).
The re-release of Back to the Future came at a time when movie theaters weren’t doing well, with films like The Smashing Machine and Tron: Ares failing to attract large audiences. However, Back to the Future still proved popular, earning $1.54 million on Friday, $1.9 million on Saturday, and $1.45 million on Sunday (according to Box Office Mojo).
The film earned $5.68 million globally over the weekend, with most of that – 86.3%, or $4.89 million – coming from U.S. theaters. International showings brought in $780,247. Universal Pictures International released the film in 2,290 U.S. theaters on October 31, 2025.
Back to the Future, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, first came out on July 3, 1985. Made for $19 million, the film became a huge hit for Universal, leading to two follow-up movies and a ride at a theme park. A special 40th-anniversary version, clocking in at 1 hour and 56 minutes, was recently shown in theaters as an adventure, comedy, and science fiction film.
Rotten Tomatoes critics agree that Back to the Future is a clever, funny, and fast-paced time travel movie with a truly memorable energy. Released over forty years ago, it remains a beloved film and has officially become one of the top 200 highest-grossing movies in American history.
