The new crime thriller City of Shadows premiered on Netflix in December 2025 and is quickly becoming popular with viewers around the globe. This Spanish-language series is set in Barcelona and follows Milo Malart, played by Isak Férriz, a detective who has just been suspended for disobeying orders.

Okay, so I just started watching this new show, and it’s gripping! It opens with this really disturbing scene – they find a burned body inside one of Gaudí’s amazing buildings in Barcelona. It pulls this detective, Milo, out of whatever he was doing and throws him back on the case. He’s teamed up with this inspector, Rebeca Garrido, and they’re trying to figure out who did it and why. It seems like the murder might be connected to Gaudí himself, which is a really cool and creepy angle.

Milo is struggling to cope with the recent loss of his nephew, who he was very close to, and is attending therapy to deal with the grief. This tragedy, combined with the demands of his work on the case, is putting a strain on his marriage and pushing him and his wife towards divorce. The combined weight of these pressures is overwhelming and could destroy him.

Currently, the series City of Shadows has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it’s worth remembering that this is based on just a few reviews. While Rotten Tomatoes‘ “fresh” or “rotten” labels aren’t always a complete reflection of quality, the score does suggest critics are enjoying the show.

Most reviews share similar opinions: City of Shadows is a solid, if not groundbreaking, crime thriller. It’s well-paced, maintains a consistent quality throughout, and creates an immersive experience for the audience. Reviewers also frequently highlight the strength of the cast as a whole.

Beyond its central plot, City of Shadows thoughtfully explores themes of capitalism, adding depth and complexity to the narrative. It’s a well-made and intelligent crime thriller that’s worth watching if you’re a fan of the genre and have already seen the year’s other major releases.
