Chuck Lorre Makes Amends For His Worst The Big Bang Theory Regret On Georgie & Mandy’s Story

With his new show, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, Chuck Lorre is addressing his biggest regret from The Big Bang Theory. It’s been nearly 20 years since he created the popular CBS comedy. A lot of discussion has focused on the original Big Bang Theory pilot and how changes to it ultimately led to the show’s successful 12-season run.

Throughout the show’s evolution, Sheldon Cooper remained its central figure. His friendship with Leonard was the foundation of the entire series, and while the other characters in Pasadena were all likable, Sheldon’s unique personality always took center stage. The prequel series, Young Sheldon, further highlighted this, giving him the most developed and comprehensive storyline of anyone in the original show. However, the show also contained what creator Chuck Lorre considers his biggest creative misstep.

Chuck Lorre Admitted To Regretting Killing George On The Big Bang Theory

Although Young Sheldon was a popular show, its ending was determined by established storylines from The Big Bang Theory. The catalyst for the finale was the death of Sheldon’s father, George. While shocking to the Cooper family within the show, this event had been previously revealed as part of Sheldon’s backstory – he had often mentioned his father passing away around the time he finished college.

Eventually, Young Sheldon had to kill off the father character, a decision creator Chuck Lorre later admitted he regretted. This happened after 18 years of the character being on screen, and it also signaled the beginning of the end for the popular The Big Bang Theory spin-off. The message below was shared after the character’s death on the show.

It’s not surprising that when the showrunners decided to kill off Sheldon’s dad, the story centered on Sheldon himself. But ‘Young Sheldon’ also made the entire Cooper family, including George, more relatable and beloved by viewers. By the time George passed away, audiences had grown to appreciate his character—he wasn’t flawless, but he was a dedicated father and husband who always tried his best.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Continues To Make George Relevant (Even After His Death)

Even though George Cooper has passed away, the show’s creators are still finding ways to make him an important part of the story, even after Young Sheldon. While he doesn’t appear on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, his death continues to impact the characters and their storylines. In the first season, it particularly drives Georgie’s journey as he deals with his grief while trying to be a good husband and father, and also shapes the role of the new Cooper family leader.

The show’s creators continued the connection between the series by bringing back Lance Barber for a guest appearance on season one of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. He appeared in Georgie’s dream sequence while Georgie was sick, which was a heartwarming moment given the often-difficult relationship between his characters on Young Sheldon. Now, Barber is set to return as George in the second season of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, and it looks like he’ll be sharing scenes with more cast members this time around.

Look, I love seeing Sid Caesar, I mean, Barber, play George, but honestly, bringing him back this much, even as a ghost or flashback, feels a little… exploitative? I get that Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage can’t magically erase that huge tragedy, and it’s sweet they’re finding ways to include him, but it’s weird. Meanwhile, Jim Parsons’ Sheldon hasn’t even made a cameo on the spinoff, and George is already popping up all over the place! It just feels… off, you know?
