Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Gets Exciting Update Ahead of Release

Good news for fans of Christopher Nolan! His next film, The Odyssey, is expected to have a longer stay in movie theaters, giving audiences more time to experience it on the big screen.

The Odyssey to have extended theatrical release alongside a few other Universal movies

Universal Pictures is planning a wider release for Christopher Nolan’s new movie, The Odyssey, meaning it will stay in theaters for a longer time.

The studio announced that its movies will play in theaters for at least five weeks in 2026 before becoming available to rent or buy at home. The New York Times reports this period will increase to seven weeks starting in 2027 before movies are released for home viewing.

This change represents a move away from the studio’s previous practice during the COVID-19 pandemic, when movies became available to stream or rent after only about three weeks in theaters. Universal is now giving major films a longer run in cinemas before they’re released digitally.

One film poised to benefit from the new plan is The Odyssey, already generating excitement as a major upcoming release. The movie boasts a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo. It’s currently set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026.

Several other films from the studio will also be shown in theaters for a longer period. These include titles like Reminders of Him, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Michael, Disclosure Day, Minions & Monsters, Focker In-Law, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and Shrek 5.

The new policy won’t affect films released by Focus Features, which is owned by Universal. Films from Focus Features will continue to be released in theaters as they have been.
