Christopher Nolan Reveals How Interstellar Changed After He Replaced Steven Spielberg

Christopher Nolan recently discussed the journey of Interstellar, explaining how it changed from the original concept Steven Spielberg had planned to the film audiences eventually saw. Released in 2014, Interstellar was a hit with both critics and moviegoers, and it remains a highly regarded film in Nolan’s body of work.

Christopher Nolan details how Interstellar changed after he boarded the project

Director Christopher Nolan recently had a conversation with actor Timothée Chalamet, who asked him about the film Interstellar. This happened before a special IMAX 70mm showing of the movie at the AMC Universal Citywalk IMAX in Los Angeles. Nolan shared how Interstellar developed from an earlier idea originally conceived by Steven Spielberg into the film we know today.

Christopher Nolan, the director of Inception, explained the film started with an idea Kip Thorne, a physicist, presented to Steven Spielberg and Paramount Pictures. Nolan described it as a science fiction movie grounded in actual scientific principles, focused on exploring the vastness of the universe.

He explained that his brother, Jonathan, landed the job of writing the screenplay for Interstellar while they were filming The Dark Knight. Jonathan worked on the project for many years, developing some amazing concepts through multiple drafts. However, the film didn’t really gain traction until director Steven Spielberg was ready to commit. When Spielberg moved on to another movie, the project became available for someone else to take on.

The director explained that he and Jonathan had been talking about the film for years, sharing ideas about his vision and goals for it. He remembered being immediately enthusiastic when he first heard about the project, and being completely hooked by the beginning. He added that he’d been exploring similar themes himself, saying, “I was playing around with the idea of time travel… concepts related to time.” He had started a few projects along those lines, but hadn’t fully committed to any of them.

After releasing Interstellar, Nolan asked his brother if he could revisit the film and incorporate some of his original ideas. His brother agreed, recognizing that Nolan’s vision aligned with what initially sparked his own enthusiasm for the project.
