Maggie Gyllenhaal’s second film as director, The Bride!, is generating buzz for its March release, thanks to a star-studded cast and large budget. The movie stars Jessie Buckley as the Bride, alongside Christian Bale and Jake Gyllenhaal, and offers a fresh, dark, and entertaining take on the classic horror story, set in 1930s Chicago. Buckley and Bale play the central couple, and the filmmakers created new costumes and makeup effects to realistically bring the undead characters to life. Bale reportedly used the extensive makeup process as a way to fully immerse himself in his role, embracing his well-known method acting approach.
Christian Bale revealed in an Entertainment Weekly interview that the six-hour makeup process for his role as “Frank” became a surprisingly useful outlet for his emotions. He explained that he’d start screaming and yelling during the transformation to cope with the darkness of the character. It turned into a funny on-set tradition, as other cast and crew members eventually joined in his vocal outbursts!
I used to scream every day, just to let out all the frustration and pent-up emotion from having to stay so still for long periods. I avoided doing it on the drive to work, worried I’d cause an accident, and I didn’t want to do it alone, fearing people would think I’d lost it. Eventually, the whole team got involved. People started hearing us and, a little like a chain reaction, they wanted to join in. By the end, around thirty people would rush to the makeup trailer to scream along with us.
‘The Bride!’ Is Christian Bale’s Return to Method Acting, With a Different Kind of Physical Transformation

Warner Bros.
Christian Bale is known for going to extreme lengths to prepare for his roles. He’s become famous for physically transforming himself, as seen in films like Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. While he bulked up to play Batman, he’s also gone in the opposite direction, losing a significant amount of weight for The Machinist, which powerfully enhanced his performance.

Christian Bale famously underwent a significant physical transformation for his role as Dick Cheney in the film Vice, gaining weight to accurately portray the former Vice President. He later admitted he’d be cautious about such drastic changes for future roles due to health reasons. However, it’s impressive to see him still committed to fully embodying his characters, as he’s doing with Frank in The Bride. Jesse Buckley, fresh off an Oscar nomination for her work in Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, adds to the anticipation surrounding The Bride, which is already generating considerable buzz as a key release in March 2026.
