According to a new report from Deadline, two big-name actors are being considered for key roles in Michael Mann’s Heat 2. The film is now set to be produced and funded by Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists, after Warner Bros. backed out due to budget concerns. Several studios were interested in taking over the project, but Deadline reports Amazon MGM has secured the deal, though Amazon declined to comment when contacted.
I’m so excited about Heat 2! I heard Christian Bale – who Michael Mann worked with on Public Enemies – is likely to join Leonardo DiCaprio in a big role. It’s a mystery what parts they’ll play, and honestly, that’s part of the fun! The story is huge, spanning years and cities. It’s based on Mann’s novel, which jumps between right after the first Heat movie, back to 1988 Chicago, and even 2000 Los Angeles. Knowing Mann is producing, along with Jerry Bruckheimer and Scott Stuber, gives me a lot of confidence this will be amazing. Shane Salerno and Eric Roth are executive producing too – what a team!
Published in 2022, the novel continues the story after the events of the first film, focusing on Shiherlis (Val Kilmer) trying to escape both the LAPD and Hanna. The story moves to Southeast Asia and also flashes back to the early days of McCauley (Robert De Niro), detailing his heists across the West Coast, the U.S.-Mexico border, and Chicago. Simultaneously, the book shows a younger Hanna (Al Pacino) rising through the ranks of the Chicago Police Department while investigating a series of brutal home invasions.
Leonardo DiCaprio & Christian Bale Could Make ‘Heat 2’ a High Profile Project

Warner Bros.
Considering Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio’s current ages, it seems unlikely they could convincingly portray younger versions of the characters played by Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. However, they could be playing updated versions of the surviving characters in a continuation of the story. Regardless, the prospect of these two acclaimed actors collaborating in a Michael Mann film captures the same excitement as the original 1995 movie, which heavily promoted the chance to see the legendary De Niro and Pacino share the screen.
Discussions about Heat 2 are just beginning, and it’s still unclear when filming will begin. Details about the project are scarce, beyond the fact that it’s based on existing material. Leonardo DiCaprio recently starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, and Christian Bale appears in Maggie Gyllenhall’s upcoming film The Bride, with Jessie Buckley. Both of these films were made by Warner Bros., the studio that previously backed out of Heat 2. With funding now reportedly in place, we can expect more official announcements about the cast soon.
