Chris Pratt returns to voice the beloved character Mario in a new film. It’s a follow-up to the successful 2023 movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
This score is comparable to the previous one, but unfortunately, it’s even lower. Despite this, it became one of the most controversial scores of 2026, as many viewers actually enjoyed it.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Follows in the Footsteps of the First Entry
Following its release on April 1st, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has received mixed reviews. Critics gave it a 42% rating based on 115 reviews, while audiences loved it, giving it a strong 91% approval rating. The movie is also currently trending as a ‘Verified Hot’ title.
This situation is similar to the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. While critics gave it a low rating of 59% based on 288 reviews, audiences loved it, giving it a 95% ‘Verified Hot’ badge.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 2023, just behind Margot Robbie’s Barbie. Given the positive reaction to the first film, a successful sequel seems very likely.
The film is performing exceptionally well, and early numbers suggest it’s a huge success. It earned $350 million in its opening weekend, easily covering its $110 million production cost and guaranteeing a profit.
According to reports, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is off to a fantastic start, earning $34 million on its opening day, Wednesday. This is the biggest opening day for an April movie, exceeding the $31.7 million earned by the first film in 2023.
While the score is certainly controversial, it’s not the lowest of 2026 so far. That distinction belongs to a documentary that received drastically different reactions – a shockingly low 10% rating from critics, but a surprisingly high audience score.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Continued an Unfortunate Trend for Chris Pratt
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is Chris Pratt’s second film this year, following the science fiction movie Mercy, and it’s currently receiving poor reviews, similar to his recent work. Since 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which was well-received by both critics (82% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences, Pratt’s films haven’t been scoring well with reviewers.
Recent films starring Chris Pratt haven’t fared well with critics. The Garfield Movie (2024) received a 36% approval rating, while The Electric State scored a very low 14%. His upcoming film, Mercy (2026), currently has a 25% rating. Interestingly, audiences generally enjoy these movies, with the lowest audience score being 67% for The Electric State. In the same period, Pratt also released one TV series, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, which received a 75% rating from critics and an 80% rating from audiences.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is playing in theaters.
