Chris Pratt’s $267M Animated Comedy Surges on Hulu 2 Weeks Before Super Mario Movie 2

It seems like animated comedies are almost guaranteed to succeed if Chris Pratt voices the lead role. Before he reprises his role as Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, an older film featuring his voice work has reappeared on Hulu’s most-watched list.

This week, The Garfield Movie entered the Top 10 movies on Hulu in the U.S., according to FlixPatrol. It started at number 8 on Sunday, quickly climbed to number 3 on Monday, but has since dropped to number 7.

1 Year After Mario, Chris Pratt Voiced the Famous Orange Feline

Just a year after The Super Mario Bros. Movie, comes The Garfield Movie. Chris Pratt voices the famous feline, and Samuel L. Jackson plays his dad, Vic. The two reconnect and then team up for a big adventure. The movie also features the voices of Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Brett Goldstein, Bowen Yang, and Snoop Dogg.

Although it didn’t reach the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie (which earned $1.3 billion worldwide), The Garfield Movie still performed well in theaters. The animated comedy made $267.3 million around the world, despite costing only $60 million to produce. Unfortunately, critics didn’t love it, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a low approval rating of just 36% based on 137 reviews.

Development on The Garfield Movie started in May 2016, soon after Alcon Entertainment obtained the rights to the Garfield franchise. Mark Dindal signed on as director in November 2018, and production began the next month. Chris Pratt was confirmed to star in the film three years later.

The Garfield Movie is the third film based on the popular Garfield franchise, following two earlier movies from the 2000s that combined live action with computer animation and starred Bill Murray as the voice of the famous lasagna-loving cat who dislikes Mondays. This new film reunites director David Reynolds Dindal and lead actor Chris Pratt.

Sony isn’t the only company benefiting from Garfield’s popularity. The new 2D animated series will be separate from the previously released computer-animated movies, meaning Chris Pratt won’t be voicing Garfield this time. Instead, the role will be taken on by Lamorne Morris, an Emmy-winning actor and comedian.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Could Launch a Nintendo Cinematic Universe

Following the positive reception of The Garfield Movie on Hulu, Chris Pratt is set to reprise his role as Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which hits theaters soon. The new film expands on the world of Mario, drawing inspiration from across the entire franchise.

Although it hasn’t been officially announced, many fans believe The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could be the start of a larger connected universe of Nintendo films. This idea gained traction after it was revealed that characters from other Nintendo franchises, like R.O.B. and Pikmin, will appear in the movie alongside Mario.
