Fans of the X-Men are in for a treat! Chris Claremont, a key writer for the series, is launching a new series that will delve deeper into the history and world of this popular Marvel mutant team.
Marvel has announced a new five-issue series called Gambit: Wanted. This series brings back legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont to expand on stories from his long history with the character. He’s joined by artist Robert Gill, known for his work on Dungeons of Doom and X-Force. Marvel says the series will reveal what happened during Gambit’s last solo adventure before he joined the X-Men full-time.

Okay, so I’m super hyped for this new Gambit story! It’s a flashback to when he first joined the X-Men, showing how it all went down. It takes place around the time he helped bring Storm back after everything that happened. Apparently, he’s back in New Orleans, and someone’s really got it out for mutants. They’ve even hired Bullseye to take him out – seriously, it’s going to be a non-stop action fest! I’m expecting a seriously explosive and kinetic showdown, and I’m here for it!
The first issue of Gambit: Wanted starts with Gambit joining a new team, but he’s hesitant to completely leave his old life behind. When a dangerous anti-mutant group attacks his city, he may be forced to act. Expect plenty of trouble – and some familiar villains – as Gambit faces a challenging situation.
The upcoming Gambit: Wanted comic promises a fresh and insightful look into Gambit’s past. Marvel revealed the series alongside cover art by Leinil Francis Yu, including a unique “Wanted Poster” variant by Phil Noto. Early artwork depicts Gambit at a lively New Orleans party, where he’s approached by a young boy.
Chris Claremont Reveals Gambit’s ‘Dramatic’ Change in New Series
I was reading the Marvel press release about the first issue of Gambit: Wanted, and Chris Claremont actually explained why he decided to do the story. It’s really interesting to hear his thoughts on it!
I love revisiting the character of Gambit because when I originally created him, I didn’t fully develop his history. I designed him with a contrasting nature – both a hero and a thief – and that internal conflict offers a lot of potential for interesting stories.
Claremont explained that Gambit: Wanted takes place when Gambit first joins the X-Men, and it allows him to delve into the reasons why the character chose to leave his free-spirited life in New Orleans and commit to a life with the team, fundamentally altering his path.
Robert Gill, the artist for the new series, said he was completely surprised and still feels a bit unreal to be working on a Gambit book with Chris. He grew up reading comics featuring Chris’s work and has always loved Gambit, considering him one of the most interesting X-Men. Despite drawing for Marvel for over eight years, he hadn’t often had the chance to illustrate the character—until now!
Gambit: Wanted #1 goes on sale July 22.
