Channing Tatum has explained why there hasn’t been a third 21 Jump Street movie. It largely comes down to financial concerns. The first film, released in 2012, was a surprisingly successful comedy starring Tatum and Jonah Hill, reimagining the classic TV show. A sequel, 22 Jump Street, also did well in 2014, but since then, plans for another movie have stalled.
Channing Tatum recently told *Variety* that he’s constantly asked about a third *Jump Street* movie – more than any other film he’s been in. The main obstacle to making it happen, according to Tatum, is the budget, specifically high producer fees. He says he, Jonah Hill, and the original directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, are willing to accept lower pay, but they’re having trouble reaching an agreement with producer Neal H. Moritz.
I doubt it will ever work out. The main issue is the excessive costs – all the producers involved mean it would cost as much as, or even more than, the film’s entire budget. There’s just too much management and it keeps falling apart. Neal’s producer fee is incredibly high, and frankly, that’s what’s stopping it from happening.
Why ’23 Jump Street’ Never Happened
Sony Pictures
Neal H. Moritz is a highly successful producer behind popular franchises like *Fast & Furious*, *I Know What You Did Last Summer*, and *Sonic the Hedgehog*. He also founded Original Films, which has collaborated with Seth Rogen on shows including *The Boys*. While Moritz is undoubtedly valuable, a third *Jump Street* movie starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum is proving too costly, especially considering comedies haven’t been performing well in theaters lately.
After the success of *21 Jump Street* and *22 Jump Street*, which earned $201 million and $331 million worldwide respectively, Sony Pictures was keen to make a third movie. They planned a crossover with the *Men in Black* franchise, tentatively titled *MiB 23*, where Channing Tatum’s character Jenko and Jonah Hill’s character Smit would join the Men in Black team. Tatum described the script as the best he’d ever read for a third film, and Hill called the *Men in Black*/*Jump Street* combination “clean, rad, and powerful” in a leaked email from the 2014 Sony hack.
The cancellation of the planned crossover between *Men in Black* and *21 Jump Street* likely contributed to the disappointing performance of *Men in Black International*. Since then, Sony has tried to revive the *Jump Street* series without its original stars, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. One attempt was a female-led spinoff, written by the creators of *Bob’s Burgers*, originally planned for 2020, but it never materialized. More recently, Brie Larson was set to return as her *21 Jump Street* character in a new spinoff, but that project has also stalled. The *21 Jump Street* franchise seems stuck in limbo, and it will likely stay that way until the filmmakers can agree on a path forward.
