Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga, Chainsaw Man, is known for being daring and unconventional, quickly becoming one of the most talked-about series of recent years. However, even its biggest fans were shocked by a particularly strange and explicit scene between Denji and Yoru in chapter 167.
The notorious scene with Denji is one of the most shocking moments in Shonen Jump, and that’s not surprising considering it draws inspiration from a famously shocking anime. While the interaction between Denji and Yoru is definitely shocking, the most infamous scene involving Shinji and Asuka in End of Evangelion is genuinely terrifying.
Shinji’s Hospital Scene Served as the Sickening Precursor to Denji’s Hand Scene
The Evangelion series is famous for its deeply unsettling and thought-provoking stories. The constant danger posed by the Angels creates a sense of hopelessness for Shinji Ikari, ultimately leading to a world-ending scenario, making its themes of despair and anxiety central to the entire story.
Some of the most powerful moments in Evangelion come from its deep exploration of identity, and the main character, Shinji Ikari, is at the center of these scenes. Throughout Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shinji, a deeply troubled teenager, is burdened with the responsibility of saving humanity. By the end of the series, this pressure, combined with his emotional struggles – often referred to as the ‘hedgehog dilemma’ – has pushed away many of the people he once cared about.
Asuka Langley is a complex character whose competitive relationship with Shinji, and her confusing feelings for him, cause her to withdraw as the series Neon Genesis Evangelion progresses. The film End of Evangelion shows Asuka at her lowest point, and she even ends up hospitalized after a serious mental breakdown because she can’t connect with her Eva unit.
Shinji Ikari visits Asuka hoping to connect with someone, anyone. Unaware that Asuka is unresponsive, he tries to get a reaction from her. When she doesn’t respond, he grabs her shoulder, causing her to fall backwards and accidentally exposing her chest through her hospital gown.
Shinji’s choice to engage in a sexual act with the unconscious Asuka is deeply disturbing and predatory, and it powerfully illustrates the extent of his profound loneliness. The scene in the hospital, particularly the close-up of his hand, remains one of the most infamous moments in anime, and has understandably become a key reference point for darker series, including those that draw heavily from Evangelion.
Denji’s Hand Scene Is Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Twisted Tribute to Evangelion
Wow, it’s wild to think that almost three decades after seeing Shinji Ikari in that incredibly impactful hospital scene in Neon Genesis Evangelion, I was completely floored again watching Denji from Chainsaw Man go through something so similar! It really hit me how powerfully that kind of scene can resonate, even after all this time.
Throughout the story of Chainsaw Man, Denji has a hard time forming genuine connections, and whenever he thinks he’s found someone, the dangerous world around him ruins the possibility of a lasting relationship. Even though he keeps facing disappointment, Denji doesn’t give up on finding love—or what he thinks love should be—which eventually leads him to meet a teenage girl named Asa.
I’ve been watching Asa, who’s possessed by a Devil named Yoru. Yoru doesn’t seem to care much about humans, but she’s surprisingly focused on Denji – the guy who becomes Chainsaw Man. It’s strange, but when Denji complained about struggling with his urges, Yoru actually intervened directly – it was a really bizarre situation.
The artist used Asa’s body in a way that created a final image strikingly and unpleasantly reminiscent of Shinji’s hospital scene from many years ago.
This scene is particularly shocking, even for Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of manga like Chainsaw Man and Fire Punch, which often deal with difficult themes. It depicts a very vulnerable character being sexually assaulted, and this disturbing act is intentionally used to evoke the unsettling atmosphere of a dark anime series like Neon Genesis Evangelion.
While not a direct copy, the events of Chainsaw Man chapter 167 share a similar emotional core with End of Evangelion, particularly Shinji’s desire for connection. Author Tatsuki Fujimoto is skilled at weaving in references to other works, and here, it’s more than just a nod to a famous scene – it highlights a shared experience of trauma between iconic anime and manga characters.
While the creator of Chainsaw Man hasn’t officially said that End of Evangelion inspired the hand scene in Chapter 167, fans see a clear connection between the characters Denji and Shinji. This is fitting, considering both characters are often portrayed as lonely individuals.
