After 23 seasons, the TV show NCIS is planning to change some details about the character Timothy McGee’s backstory. With the passing of Ducky Mallard in 2021, there are no longer any original members of the core NCIS team left. Many viewers may not realize that Sean Murray’s character wasn’t initially part of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ team, and first appeared as a guest much later in the first season of NCIS.
Throughout the series, McGee has become its most central character, witnessing every version of the show. The biggest challenge for NCIS now is keeping his character fresh and interesting after being on the show for so long. Recently, with significant changes happening within the agency, McGee’s storyline has felt uncertain.
McGee was disappointed when he didn’t get the Deputy Director position at NCIS, and his character has felt a bit directionless since then. But upcoming seasons could finally give him a significant story arc that changes how viewers see him.
Timothy McGee’s Past Will Be At The Center Of NCIS Season 23, Episode 12

When NCIS returns, everyone is eager to find out what happens with Emily Bishop’s story, but another plotline is shaping up to be just as compelling. According to TV journalist Matt Mitovich, the March 17th episode will focus on McGee. The case begins like a standard investigation for the MCRT team, but it takes an unexpected turn when they discover a secret from McGee’s past that could dramatically change everything he thought he knew.
Like many characters on NCIS, McGee’s past has been revealed bit by bit over the years. We’ve met his father and sister in separate episodes, but his mother remains a largely unknown figure. The show established that she was still alive when McGee’s father was diagnosed with cancer, and very little has been said about her since. This makes her a great candidate to be featured in the upcoming storyline hinted at for NCIS season 23.
Alternatively, the new information could involve McGee’s father. While their relationship was difficult at times, they reconciled before his father’s death in a particularly memorable NCIS episode. Given that McGee’s father was an Admiral, this revelation might affect McGee’s position and reputation within NCIS.
What Rewriting McGee’s Past Could Mean For His NCIS Future
Paramount
Exploring McGee’s personal life in season 23 of NCIS would be a smart way to develop his character. He’s currently stuck professionally, with no clear path for advancement unless the agency undergoes significant changes or the show revisits the Deputy Director idea – which could feel like a repeat of past storylines. Focusing on his personal life also fits with the season’s apparent emphasis on the show’s history and long-running themes.
Exploring McGee’s background would help develop what many viewers consider the show’s central character. As the last of Gibbs’ original team still with NCIS, he’s a fan favorite. More importantly, delving into his past could set the stage for his future. While it’s good to see him continue as a Special Agent on NCIS, given his accomplishments, it’s time for him to advance his career and take on new challenges.
