Even though it’s been five years since Castlevania finished, the Netflix series remains a great watch, even if some game fans disagree. Netflix has a lot of good fantasy shows, but it’s frustrating when a series gets canceled after only a season or two.
Netflix has a reputation for canceling shows before they reach their full potential, and this seems to happen particularly often with fantasy series. That makes Castlevania stand out even more – the original four seasons and its follow-up are truly among the best fantasy shows available on streaming platforms.
What Is Castlevania About?
Castlevania is an animated series inspired by the popular Konami video game franchise that began in 1986. While based on the overall series, the show primarily follows the story of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse (1989), with elements also drawn from Curse of Darkness (2005) and Symphony of the Night (1997).
The story starts with Vlad Dracula launching a war against Wallachia, unleashing a demonic army to punish its people for a past grievance. To protect his homeland, Trevor Belmont, the sole survivor of a disgraced family of monster hunters, embarks on a quest to defeat Vlad and his forces.
Why Castlevania Was So Controversial
Although critics generally love the Castlevania series – it has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – many longtime fans of the original video games have had a more mixed reaction. The main issue seems to be that the show takes quite a few creative freedoms with the established story and characters from the games.
While the show tells a new story, it includes elements from the games. However, some fans who were already familiar with the game’s plot were disappointed that those specific storylines weren’t adapted. This is a common problem for shows and movies based on video games, and it’s something the upcoming season of Fallout might also struggle with.
Castlevania: Nocturne Is Just As Good

Even though some fans had issues with it, Castlevania delivered four strong seasons and spawned a follow-up series, Castlevania: Nocturne. Nocturne draws inspiration from the 1993 game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and takes place in France during the French Revolution, over three centuries after the original series.
I absolutely loved this series! It follows Richter Belmont, who’s related to the original Trevor, and his sister Maria as they try to stop this incredibly powerful vampire god from destroying everything. It’s just as good as the first Castlevania show, and it really proves that this franchise is one of Netflix’s best when it comes to fantasy. It’s awesome to see them building such a great world!
