Captain America’s Ally Turns Evil, Marvel Introduces Doctor Doom’s Secret Relative

You know, Shakespeare had it right – the bad things people do really do follow them. And that’s so true with Doctor Doom. Even though he seems to be gone, everything’s falling apart in the Marvel Universe! Latveria, his country, is basically tearing itself apart with a civil war, and everyone’s trying to raid his weapons stockpiles. That’s when Captain America shows up, and things get really complicated. He runs into an old friend who’s now an enemy, and discovers someone who might actually be related to Doom! It’s a mess, but a fascinating one.

The current Captain America story arc, “Doom’s Shadow,” takes Steve Rogers to Latveria, where he’s facing multiple challenges. While publicly working with a SHIELD team to recover lost technology and magical items from Doctor Doom’s collection, Captain America is also privately investigating the conflicts within Latveria and trying to understand the motivations of those involved.

Latveria is currently embroiled in a civil war with three main groups vying for control. The first, True Latveria, currently holds power and is led by a masked figure called Salvation – many suspect Salvation is actually Doctor Doom. The Latverian Liberators are another faction, resorting to violent conflict against True Latveria. The third group, the Homeland Party, is led by a woman named Alina and focuses on peaceful protests.

In Captain America #7, from Chip Zdarsky, Delio Diaz, and Frank Alpizar, Steve Rogers comes face-to-face with various groups vying for power. The story begins with him caught in a battle between True Latveria and the Latverian Liberators, putting civilians in danger. After the fighting stops, Steve is shocked to discover Salvation is someone he’s encountered before.

Who are the new heirs of Doctor Doom?

Marius Wolf, a revolutionary who sparked the initial uprising against Doctor Doom after Doom took control of Latveria, is the character known as Salvation. He was first introduced in the ‘Our Secret Wars’ storyline, which launched the current Captain America comic series. This story explored how Steve Rogers became involved in a secret military operation soon after being revived.

Steve Rogers was told the mission was to prevent Doctor Doom from following in the footsteps of the Red Skull. But it quickly became clear that despite everything Doom had done, he genuinely cared about the people of Latveria. This wasn’t true of Wolf, who seemed far more focused on personal revenge than on actually building a democratic government for the country, despite what he claimed.

Captain America quickly discovers that Wolf’s violent tendencies haven’t disappeared with time. In fact, as Salvation, Wolf has ironically become similar to the very villain he despised – Doctor Doom. Like Doom, he conceals his identity with a mask and refuses to take responsibility for the people who died under his command.

Towards the conclusion of the story, Steve Rogers is reached out to by another group of rebels from Latveria. This time, it’s the enigmatic Alina, leader of the Homeland Party, who contacts him. She then reveals her complete name: Alina von Doom.

This comic book issue wraps up before Alina’s connection to Doctor Doom is explained. She looks young enough to be his daughter, though it’s never been officially confirmed that Doom has one. However, given his past relationships and adopted children, it’s certainly possible. There are even rumors that Doom is the father of Caroline, the daughter of sorceress Morgan LaFay.

Captain America #7 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
