Welcome to a new bi-weekly feature! Here, we’ll explore some of the most shocking and memorable moments in comic books – moments involving both heroes and villains – and discuss how they affected fans and the comic book world.
The X-Men reached their greatest popularity in the 1990s with a fresh focus on star characters, compelling new team members, and a highly successful cartoon show. The five seasons of X-Men: The Animated Series deeply resonated with a generation, leading to its revival on Disney+. The first season of the new series revisited classic storylines from the ’90s comics and may be hinting at a major, tragic event in the X-Men’s future.
The X-Men became well-known in the ’90s not just for heroes, but also for introducing some truly powerful villains. One villain, named Onslaught, became a massive threat to the entire Marvel Universe, surpassing all expectations. Onslaught, a being with incredible mental powers, took control of New York City and defeated many of Marvel’s most iconic heroes. This crisis began with a difficult choice made by Professor Charles Xavier, which inadvertently unleashed this dangerous force and jeopardized everything the X-Men stood for.
Professor X Repressed His Dark Side Until Fatal Attractions
As a gamer who’s followed the X-Men for years, I always saw Professor X as kind of a leader, almost like a savior figure for mutants. He didn’t exactly ask for that role, and sometimes it felt like he liked being seen that way, but mostly he really believed in his dream of mutants and humans living together peacefully. He worked hard to maintain that image. But the thing is, everyone has their stuff, right? And Xavier… well, he had some seriously dark secrets that ate away at him over time. It was a big part of his story, and honestly, it made him a much more complex character.
Over the years, the X-Men faced moments revealing a darker side to him, notably when a shadowy part of his mind briefly endangered them. However, the true extent of his dedication to his vision became clear during the X-Men’s intense fight with Magneto in the ‘Fatal Attractions’ storyline.
The first season of X-Men ’97 culminated in the ‘Fatal Attractions’ storyline. After Magneto removed the adamantium from Wolverine, Xavier tried to stop him by entering his mind and erasing his memories, hoping to end the threat. However, Magneto unexpectedly fought back, corrupting Xavier’s mind and amplifying his own darker side.
Xavier’s descent into darkness and the arrival of Onslaught weren’t sudden events. There had been hints and even direct warnings about what was to come. The X-Men first learned about Onslaught’s secret activities while investigating a future threat called Operation: Zero Tolerance, and they also noticed his recruitment of mutant agents like Post and Dark Beast.
Bishop first traveled back in time to deliver a cryptic warning about a future threat to the team, but the X-Men didn’t heed his advice. They continued to trust their mentor until it was too late. When Onslaught finally appeared, a single attack was enough to shatter the X-Men’s stability like never before.
When Onslaught Struck, The Marvel Universe Trembled
The attack that kicked off the Onslaught saga was devastating for the X-Men. It completely destroyed their home, the X-Mansion, and almost wiped out the entire team. The shock came not only from the betrayal of a trusted mentor, but also from discovering that this mentor possessed the immense power of Magneto. They were only saved by Bishop, a mutant who had traveled from the future, and in doing so, he accomplished the purpose he’d come back in time to achieve.
As a huge comic fan, I remember when things got really intense! The X-Men teamed up with the Avengers and Fantastic Four to battle this seriously powerful villain called Onslaught. He’d basically hijacked the government’s Sentinel robots, turning them into his personal army with plans to take over New York City. To make things even worse, he somehow absorbed the incredible psychic powers of Nate Grey, also known as X-Man, and… well, it was a mess!
Both mutants and Professor X were released from Onslaught’s control, but the danger wasn’t over. Onslaught continued to evolve, becoming physically stronger and gaining even more powerful abilities. This created a massive psionic storm that almost leveled New York City.
The X-Men were able to defeat Onslaught, but only because the Avengers and Fantastic Four willingly sacrificed their bodies. Onslaught took control of their physical forms, giving the X-Men a target to attack. While they ultimately succeeded in defeating him, the victory came at a terrible cost – most of Marvel’s heroes perished in the battle.
After surviving on a new Earth unintentionally created by Franklin Richards, the X-Men were publicly seen as having betrayed their allies during a fight, leading the world to believe they’d lost their heroes. Though Xavier was freed from Onslaught, he still felt responsible and surrendered to authorities while the X-Men worked to rebuild their reputation on their own.
Xavier’s Dream Struggled to Survive a World Without Heroes
Man, things got really dark after the final battle with Onslaught. It felt like all the heroes were gone, and everyone just blamed the X-Men for everything. Anti-mutant feelings exploded, and this politician, Graydon Creed, who was totally against us, almost became president! It was insane. Then, get this, his own mother, Mystique, assassinated him. Talk about a complicated situation!
Honestly, it was rough. Magneto’s actions, even though he thought he was helping, basically created the very future he was trying to avoid – a world terrified of mutants. Sure, the other heroes showed up and took some of the pressure off the X-Men, but the real problem remained. Everyone was just reminded how dangerous mutants could be, even with us around trying to keep the peace. It felt like a major setback, and it was hard to see things getting better after that.
Even though Xavier came back and proved himself by continuing to fight for the X-Men and all mutants, the threat wasn’t truly over. The mental form of Onslaught lived on, reappearing several times to endanger countless worlds. This serves as a lasting warning to Xavier, the X-Men, and everyone else that even their greatest strengths have the potential to become their biggest weaknesses.
The X-Men never fully trusted Xavier again, and the image of him as a benevolent leader began to crumble. More and more damaging truths came to light, diminishing his standing with the team. His disastrous rescue attempt from Krakoa – which resulted in the deaths of Vulcan’s team – and his efforts to stifle the development of Danger’s AI further eroded their faith. Although he tried to reclaim his position as a savior, it was only a matter of time before Xavier ultimately betrayed the X-Men and jeopardized their entire world.
Xavier’s fall from grace was at its lowest point when he became Onslaught, unleashing chaos on the Marvel Universe. Though he eventually returned and experienced some forgiveness, the vision he’d worked towards for so long began to crumble. Sadly, his X-Men never truly saw him the same way again.
