After news surfaced that a planned Star Wars spin-off about the popular character Kylo Ren (played by Adam Driver) was cancelled, the film’s writer, Steven Soderbergh, has shared details. The movie, titled The Hunt for Ben Solo, would have taken place after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Also, in the aftermath of the HFBS situation, I asked Kathy Kennedy if LFL had ever turned in a finished movie script for greenlight to Disney and had it rejected. She said no, this was a first. — (@bitchuation.bsky.social) 2025-10-22T21:01:56.328Z
On Bluesky, Steven Soderbergh explained more about why the film was cancelled. He said he asked Kathleen Kennedy if Lucasfilm had ever submitted a completed script to Disney that was turned down, and she confirmed that this was the first time it had happened.
For the record, I did not enjoy lying about the existence of THE HUNT FOR BEN SOLO, but it really did need to remain a secret…until now! — (@bitchuation.bsky.social) 2025-10-20T22:18:12.336Z
The filmmaker explained he was sorry about having to keep The Hunt For Ben Solo a secret. He wrote, “I didn’t like having to pretend it didn’t exist, but it was important to keep the project under wraps…until now.”

Earlier this month, Driver sparked discussion about the cancelled spin-off. He shared his perspective on what happened, explaining:
I’d been considering revisiting the role since 2021, and Kathleen Kennedy had contacted me about it. I always told her that if we had a fantastic director and a compelling story, I’d be eager to return. I really enjoyed playing that character and had a lot of affection for him.
He said Lucasfilm was very enthusiastic about the idea and fully grasped the film’s direction. But when they presented it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, the executives turned it down, as they couldn’t accept the possibility that Ben Solo had survived.
Following comments made by actor Adam Driver, Star Wars fans have started a campaign to convince Disney to bring his character, Ben Solo (Kylo Ren), back for another movie. Recently, a banner saying “Save The Hunt for Ben Solo” was flown over Burbank, California. Disney and Lucasfilm haven’t yet responded to the fans’ requests, so it’s unclear whether a future film focusing on Ben Solo will actually happen.
