Some fans were let down by the recent Kayce Dutton spin-off featuring Luke Grimes, leading many to believe that Kelly Reilly returning as Beth Dutton in the upcoming Dutton Ranch is the franchise’s best chance to regain its popularity. Yellowstone concluded with its fifth season in December 2024, but the stories of Kayce and Beth will continue in the spin-off series Marshals and Dutton Ranch, respectively.
Despite a strong start with 20.6 million viewers across all platforms in its first week – making it the biggest new series launch of the 2025-2026 season – the show Marshals hasn’t fully satisfied everyone. It currently has the lowest rating on Rotten Tomatoes compared to other shows in the Yellowstone universe. However, the related series Dutton Ranch could still turn things around and improve the overall reception.
Dutton Ranch Will Release On Paramount+ In 2026
Cole Hauser is returning as Rip Wheeler in Dutton Ranch, a new series coming to Paramount+ in late 2026. Originally planned for release in late 2025, the show has been in development for some time, with initial casting news revealing the spinoff shortly before its announcement.
Originally known as The Dutton Ranch, the new series got its first preview at the 83rd Golden Globes on January 11, 2026. The teaser showed Beth and Rip riding across the ranch. The official title was revealed as Dutton Ranch, a shorter and simpler version of the original working title.
The new show, continuing the story from Season 5 of Yellowstone, will follow Beth and Rip Dutton as they start a new life on a 7,000-acre ranch with their son, Carter. The spinoff will also feature acclaimed actors Ed Harris and Annette Bening, and aims to recapture the success of the original series.
The new show, Dutton Ranch, is seen as the last chance to keep the Yellowstone story alive after the original series ended. Ratings for Kayce’s spinoff were low, and with Kevin Costner and creator Taylor Sheridan no longer working together, the future of the franchise relies on Dutton Ranch being a success. Fans are hoping it will be better received.
How Dutton Ranch Can Save John Dutton’s Yellowstone Story
Many viewers haven’t found Marshals as engaging as Yellowstone. This isn’t entirely surprising, as the spinoff significantly changed the format of the original series. Unlike Yellowstone, which tells a longer, ongoing story, Marshals focuses on individual cases each week, following Kayce as he works with a specialized team of US Marshals to solve crimes.
Although Kayce’s show is the first in the series to appear on a major network like CBS, it doesn’t quite capture what made Yellowstone so successful. Critics have pointed out that the characters aren’t as compelling; for example, Pete “Cal” Calvin and Andrea Cruz don’t feel as fully developed or impactful as the characters in Yellowstone.
The new series, Dutton Ranch, will follow the successful style of the Yellowstone universe and stream on Paramount+, where the other Yellowstone spinoffs are available. Creator Taylor Sheridan previously produced two successful spinoffs before Marshals and Dutton Ranch, all of which have streamed successfully on the platform. Dutton Ranch will once again be a serialized drama available on Paramount+.
Although Dutton Ranch has a stronger chance of capturing the feel and rhythm of the original series, it still faces a potential challenge. Like Marshals, this new show will have Taylor Sheridan as an executive producer, but he won’t be directly running the show day-to-day.
Taylor Sheridan’s involvement with popular shows like Yellowstone, 1883, and 1923 probably helped make them hits. He’s also the creative lead for his new Paramount+ series, The Madison. However, the success of Dutton Ranch will be a key test to see if Sheridan’s interconnected TV world can continue to thrive even when he’s not directly in charge of every detail.
