The popular Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin ride at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World will reopen on April 8, 2026, after being closed for updates. Disney announced the reopening date on March 12, 2026.
The attraction initially closed on August 4, 2025, for planned updates to improve how things work and make visits more enjoyable. While Disney said it would be closed until spring 2026, April 8th is the first firm date they’ve given for when it will reopen.
Scope of Refurbishment
The ride is getting a major overhaul with updates to its mechanics, how it’s played, and overall look and feel. You’ll notice new ride cars with fresh colors and better ways to interact with the experience.
The vehicles have been upgraded with handheld blasters instead of fixed cannons, giving players more control when aiming. These blasters also feature realistic sensations through haptic feedback and sound, providing riders with extra cues during the game.

Let me tell you, they’ve really upped the ante on this ride’s shooting game. Not only did they add new blasters, but the targets themselves are much more satisfying to hit. They’ve added these cool lighting effects and visual cues that let you know when you’ve scored, which makes the whole experience way more engaging and really helps with the competitive scoring. It’s not just about seeing a number go up anymore – you feel like you’re making a difference with every shot.
A new support robot named Buddy, created by the teams at Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar, now appears in a pre-ride scene. Buddy helps guests learn about the ride’s updated features and provides a quick tutorial before the adventure starts.
Guests will now be able to see Buzz Lightyear and Zurg together at the very beginning of the experience as their adventure begins.
Operational Technology and Experience
The new vehicles now have built-in screens that show scores as you ride. This is an improvement over the old system, which didn’t give riders immediate feedback.

Work has also been done to improve the area around the ride, including the queue line. Updates show new handrails and lighting have been added near the entrance. A new sign structure, similar in style to the one for Space Mountain, has been put up, but the lettering wasn’t finished as of early March 2026.
Context Within Magic Kingdom Operations
With the return of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, Walt Disney World is continuing a series of updates to its attractions, planned for completion in 2026. Another popular Magic Kingdom ride, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, will also be back open in early May 2026, following a significant renovation.

According to Disney’s schedule, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will be closed for renovations until spring 2026.
Historical Background
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has been a popular attraction in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland since it first opened in 1998. Guests ride through the attraction and use laser guns to shoot at targets, earning points as they interact with scenes from the story.

The major overhaul planned for 2025-2026 will be the biggest improvement to the attraction in years. Before this project, the ride’s shooting system and targets hadn’t been significantly updated since it first opened.
Looking Ahead
Now that the park has officially announced the reopening date of April 8th, both planners and visitors making spring 2026 travel arrangements can look forward to the ride being back in action.

Disney hasn’t announced any further changes to its park schedule related to this reopening, but you can expect to see the latest information on their official calendars and announcements closer to the date.
