Buffy & Angel’s Missing Scene That Fans Desperately Want

A lot of viewers loved the romance between Buffy and Angel. Although some might question their age difference today, they weren’t the most talked-about couple on the show.

As a longtime viewer, I have to say the relationship between the vampire slayer and the soulful vampire was the show’s most powerful love story. What really got to me was how even when they were apart, they were still each other’s anchors. That’s why one scene, which sadly never made it to air, feels like such a missed opportunity – it could have really cemented their connection.

A Buffy and Angel Post-Relationship Scene Was Cut

The appeal of Buffy and Angel’s relationship stemmed from the fact that they were ultimately incompatible. Beyond the obvious – he was a vampire and she was a vampire slayer – their biggest challenge was simply time. Angel was immortal, while Buffy was human, meaning she would age and eventually pass away, leaving their future inherently limited.

At the close of Season 3, Angel decided to let Buffy pursue a lasting relationship with someone new. This also allowed him to move on and lead his own show, Angel. Despite leaving, a strong connection between them persisted, and they made guest appearances on each other’s series, always filled with a palpable tension. The episode that resonated with me the most was “I Will Remember You.”

Episode 8 of Season 1 was filled with drama and romance, but ended with a heartbreaking twist, typical of Buffy and Angel’s story. While in Los Angeles, they battled a demon who accidentally restored Angel’s humanity. Suddenly, the obstacles keeping them apart vanished – Angel could now walk in the sun and, for the first time, they could be physically intimate.

Their peaceful existence wouldn’t last long. Humanity brought vulnerability, and Angel realized he could no longer fight with Buffy. This troubled him greatly, especially knowing a final, devastating battle was coming. Angel would rather sacrifice their relationship than be forced to witness her death.

The most heartbreaking moment of the episode happened when Angel revealed he was going back to being a vampire, a decision that meant Buffy would lose all memory of their conversation. Though she desperately insisted she’d never forget him, she ultimately did. Things went back to normal, but Angel was left alone with the knowledge of what they’d shared and lost.

Stories of their intense love became legendary, creating a standard no other romance seemed to reach. Despite appearing on different channels, the public’s fascination with them never faded. Sadly, many fans who longed to see their complex relationship play out on screen were left disappointed, as a promising storyline was never developed.

Buffy’s death was a hugely important moment in the show, and really captured its core themes. She understood her entire life was meant to fight evil, and she made that ultimate sacrifice by jumping from a tower into a magical energy source. While she saved the world, it deeply affected those she loved. This impact was explored in the Season 3 episode, “Heartthrob,” particularly through Angel’s reaction.

Angel admitted that no one meant as much to him as she did, but her death didn’t lead him to despair. He would carry on and continue fighting, believing that’s what she would have wanted. Buffy’s resurrection added another layer of difficulty, though this particular attempt at bringing someone back to life ultimately failed.

Both Angel and Buffy included mentions of the characters planning to reunite after Buffy was brought back to life, but those meetings never actually appeared on screen. Previously, when Buffy or Angel traveled between Sunnydale and Los Angeles, fans would at least get small hints about what happened with the couple. This time, however, there was nothing. Both shows simply ended with Angel and Buffy going their separate ways, leaving viewers with no idea about what happened between them.

Buffy and Angel Acknowledged the Slayer’s Death in Different Ways

Buffy, a vampire slayer who had already died once before, faced a much more serious death the second time. She was brought back to life thanks to some help, and shortly after, Angel reached out to her. He’d learned she was alive and they arranged to meet. Instead of traveling to Los Angeles, Buffy suggested they meet somewhere in between their locations.

This likely alluded to the challenge of bringing Buffy and Angel together on screen, as their shows aired on different networks. Despite this, their reunion delivered exactly what fans wanted. When Buffy spoke about it afterward, she was reluctant to share details, only describing the encounter as “intense” before swiftly moving on to a different topic.

Angel reacted in a comparable way. Back in Los Angeles, his team kept asking what happened, but he remained characteristically reserved. He simply didn’t want to discuss it, and that was that. The fact that both shows avoided detailing the event only increased my curiosity while watching them, and it still does.

It’s probably best not to include another scene showing the two lovers together. Their relationship was intense, but ultimately unsuccessful, and a new scene would likely just repeat what viewers already understand: they were never meant to be. The show has included similar moments before, but this particular scene feels unnecessary.

In a memorable scene, Darla mentioned Buffy after she and Angel slept together. Darla wanted to corrupt Angel, hoping their intimacy would make him lose his soul – something that had happened with Buffy, and she was upset that it didn’t.

Buffy often revisited her past with Angel, even long after they broke up. The seventh season finally helped her resolve a problem she’d been dealing with for years. When Anya became a vengeful demon and lost control, Buffy thought about killing her, but Xander disagreed. Buffy correctly pointed out that she had been forced to kill Angel, despite loving him deeply. This moment highlighted the strength of their love and acknowledged the pain of that sacrifice.

Buffy discovered Xander had kept secret the fact that Willow was trying to bring Angel’s soul back, which ultimately caused Buffy to send Angel away. Xander had been getting by with this deception for a while, and it was particularly frustrating because he was now criticizing Anya for her own secrets.

Angel and Buffy always felt connected, even long after their time together. The writers hinted at a secret meeting between them, but never showed it, which is still frustrating for fans who hoped for a reunion. While it wouldn’t have changed the main storylines of either show, it would have deepened their legendary relationship and brought their story full circle.

Could Buffy Now Remember the Day That She Lost?

Buffy and Angel kept their conversations very private, which gave them some much-needed space in their relationship. However, their silence also hinted that they might be dealing with hidden problems, and this secrecy could have led to unforeseen complications.

The vampire slayer experienced a magical death and resurrection, which changed her. This was demonstrated by how Angel could physically strike her without his inhibitor chip activating. This magical alteration may have also affected past spells cast on her, like when the Powers That Be forced her to forget a painful event.

When Buffy returned from the dead, she didn’t share everything with her friends, mainly because she didn’t want them to know they’d brought her back from heaven. She also kept quiet about what happened with Angel, possibly because it was too difficult to think about. Already overwhelmed with readjusting to life, Buffy felt that remembering a perfect, unattainable day would only add to her pain.

The weight of what happened might have been why Angel and Buffy kept it a secret. If they were the only ones who remembered Angel’s life as a human, sharing the story wouldn’t have served any purpose. Plus, Angel might have been the only person who truly understood the emotional impact of being pulled from heaven. Having experienced other dimensions himself, he could relate to the psychological effects of such a traumatic event.

Unfortunately, the only story fans have about what happened between Angel and Buffy is a comic book called “Reunion” by Jane Espenson. Like the viewers, the characters from Buffy were also curious about their encounter. The comic features Xander, Dawn, and Anya each sharing their own theories about what went on when Angel and Buffy met. While it doesn’t reveal what actually happened, Anya’s account of their two meetings at Denny’s seems to come the closest to the truth.

The comic book focused on the frustrating experience of fans desperately seeking closure, but without providing any real resolution. Thankfully, Angel and Buffy did meet again – in the final episode of Buffy, Angel appeared to offer a glimmer of hope for their relationship. While Buffy didn’t end up with anyone specific, the finale suggested a potential future for her and Angel. Beyond that, fans will have to create their own endings – or accept the often-debated alternate universe.
