Bruce Willis stopped acting in 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that affects communication. It was later revealed he actually has frontotemporal dementia. His wife and older children have been caring for him and keeping people updated when they can. Recently, his daughter Rumer Willis, from his previous marriage to Demi Moore, shared that despite the challenges, there have been some positive moments while caring for her father.
The 37-year-old mother of one participated in another Q&A via her Instagram stories, during which she touched upon a variety of topics. One fan asked her how the Willis patriarch is doing at this point in his health battle. Rumer, who revealed that she’s put a lot of thought into this question due to it cropping up occasionally, explained why it’s hard to quantify whether her famous father is doing well or not:
I get asked about this a lot, and it’s a tough question. Honestly, anyone with frontotemporal dementia isn’t doing well, so saying he’s ‘great’ doesn’t really fit. It’s hard to measure his progress against normal standards anymore. I understand why people ask, especially during Q&A sessions, but it’s a difficult thing to answer truthfully.

The Willis family has openly shared the difficulties of caring for Bruce as his health has declined. His wife, Emma Heming, recently revealed that one of the first signs of his illness was the return of a childhood stutter. While Heming admits this has been a tough time for her and their family, she’s found comfort in the fact that their love for each other has become even stronger as they navigate this together.
It’s been really tough hearing Rumer Willis talk about how hard things have been with her dad’s health. She even said Father’s Day is difficult now, which just breaks my heart. But like her stepmom, Emma, she’s trying to focus on the good and be grateful. Rumer recently shared that she’s just so thankful to still have her dad with us, and honestly, that really resonated with me. It’s a really tough situation for their whole family, but it’s inspiring to see them find gratitude even now.
I’m just so happy and thankful I can still visit and hug him. It means so much to me that he can feel my love when I hug him, even if he doesn’t remember who I am, and that I can feel his love in return.
It’s been a tough few years for the Willis family with Bruce’s health, but there have also been some incredibly sweet moments. The biggest, for me, was the arrival of Rumer’s daughter, Louetta, in 2023 – making Bruce a grandfather! Rumer has talked about how wonderful it is to see him with his granddaughter, and honestly, it just warms my heart to think about it.
It makes me so happy to still see his personality and know he feels my love. I’m really grateful for the chance to visit him with Louetta and spend time together. It means a lot to feel his love for me, and to be able to love him back and be there for him.
Bruce Willis is currently receiving care in a facility, as his wife, Emma Heming, shared earlier this year. While the announcement faced some criticism, Heming explained that it was the right step for his health. It’s been a difficult few years for the entire Willis family, but it’s encouraging to see that Rumer, like other family members, is staying positive and focusing on the good things in her life.
