Brandon Sanderson confirms his next Apple TV adaptation after Mistborn.
In January, popular fantasy author Brandon Sanderson, known for works like The Wheel of Time, agreed to a deal with Apple TV to adapt his Cosmere book series. As part of this agreement, his Mistborn novels will be turned into a movie for the streaming service.
Brandon Sanderson recently shared an update on his YouTube channel, confirming he’ll start working on the first episode of The Stormlight Archive as soon as he finishes the script for the Mistborn movie, which is currently about 72% done. He also mentioned that while a team of writers will contribute to Stormlight, he hopes to personally write the majority of it.
After I complete the Mistborn script, I plan to develop a pilot for Stormlight and then work on outlining the entire first season.
I won’t be doing all the writing on my own. I’m planning to collaborate with other writers, but I also want to personally write a significant portion of it.
Similar to Mistborn, The Stormlight Archive takes place within the larger Cosmere universe. The series began in August 2010 with The Way of Kings, and the first book introduces a world defined by magical storms, noble knights, and terrifying creatures called Voidbringers.
The Cosmere universe is set across various time periods. It all began with the death of Adolnasium, a powerful being whose essence shattered into sixteen pieces, known as Shards. These Shards were scattered across numerous worlds, resulting in a diverse range of magical systems throughout the universe.
So far, The Stormlight Archive includes five novels and two shorter stories. While it’s already been turned into both a virtual reality and a tabletop game, adapting its intricate plot for television presents a new hurdle. Both Apple TV’s planned adaptations of Mistborn and Stormlight are just beginning, and they haven’t even started thinking about who will play the characters.
As a long-time fan of Brandon Sanderson, I’m genuinely excited about the news that Apple TV has landed the rights to adapt his epic fantasy novels. Apparently, there was a real bidding war, with Sanderson meeting with just about every studio in town! What’s really reassuring is that he’s not just handing over his worlds – he’s staying heavily involved. He’ll be writing, producing, consulting, and, crucially, has final approval on everything. That level of creative control should mean any adaptation stays true to the spirit of his books, and that gives me a lot of hope for the future of this project.
With author Brandon Sanderson’s books having sold 50 million copies globally, The Stormlight Archive is shaping up to be a highly anticipated project. This deal also positions Apple TV as a major player in the fantasy genre, enabling it to go head-to-head with competitors like HBO and Disney.
