This weekend will be ‘s last episode as a regular on Saturday Night Live. He first joined the show in 2018 as a writer, then became a featured player, and was later promoted to the main cast. While the reason for his departure hasn’t been announced, it appears he’s leaving on good terms, similar to other recent cast members.
Variety reported that Yang is leaving the show, with this week’s episode being the last new one for the year. It’s a fitting departure, as Ariana Grande, Yang’s co-star in both Wicked films, is hosting. Cher will be the musical guest on this week’s episode.
Since becoming a series regular, Yang has quickly become a favorite, earning four Emmy nominations. He’s also made history as the first Chinese-American cast member in the show’s 51-year run.
What Else Is Bowen Yang Working On?

Bleecker Street
I know a lot of us are sad to not see Jo Koy and Bowen Yang on our screens weekly with their show, but this definitely isn’t the end of seeing Bowen! Wicked: For Good is still playing in cinemas, and there’s a lot of buzz that this is just the start of a much bigger world for the story. They’re hinting at more movies and TV shows, and I’m really hoping that means we’ll get to see more of Bowen’s character, Pfannee, in the future!
Some people might see Bowen Yang’s work on Saturday Night Live as an extension of his comedy podcast, Las Culturistas, which he co-hosts with Matt Rogers. Launched in 2016, the podcast dives into all aspects of pop culture and became part of the iHeartMedia podcast network in 2020. Las Culturistas has consistently appeared on “best of” lists throughout its run, even being recognized as one of the all-time greatest podcasts. The podcast’s success has also led to an awards show, broadcast on Bravo and available for streaming on Peacock.
Besides her role in Wicked, Yang has appeared in films like Bros, Fire Island, and Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain. Leaving Saturday Night Live will probably give him the opportunity to take on even more parts in movies and television shows.
A Pivotal Year for ‘Saturday Night Live’

NBC
Several long-time cast members have left Saturday Night Live this season, including Ego Nwodim, Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker, and Emil Wakim. The comedy group Please Don’t Destroy also finished their run, with Martin Herlihy becoming a writer for the show and Ben Marshall joining the main cast. John Higgins has left the program altogether.
After celebrating its 50th anniversary and the recent release of a movie about its very first episode, Saturday Night Live shows no signs of disappearing, even though it’s currently changing and evolving. Many fans are now wondering how long Kenan Thompson will stay on the show, as he’s been a cast member since 2003 and is now the longest-serving in SNL history.
