The new show Boston Blue, a spin-off of Blue Bloods, has quickly become popular, bringing back many actors from the original series. Fans have noticed that Tom Selleck, who played Frank Reagan, isn’t appearing, and Donnie Wahlberg has now explained why his on-screen father won’t be returning.
Mark Wahlberg, who plays Danny Reagan on the show, mentioned to Parade that he’d always hoped Tom Selleck would appear on Boston Blue. Wahlberg explained that he spoke with Selleck before committing to the series, and that Selleck was very encouraging, though he didn’t share specifics of their conversations.
He also explained that while the actor is open to the spinoff, his involvement depends on a few things. The timing needs to be perfect, and any appearance by Frank would have to fit naturally into the storyline. Wahlberg promised that if Selleck ever decides to return, he’ll respect any requirements he has.
I’d definitely enjoy having Tom visit Boston, and I’d be thrilled if Danny could go to New York to see Frank. Tom always prioritizes the quality of the work, so of course I’d love to collaborate with him on the show. Hopefully, when the time is right, we can develop an idea that really excites him.
Although it’s uncertain if Frank Reagan will appear, a familiar face from Blue Bloods will be a regular in season one of Boston Blue. Marisa Ramirez, who plays Maria Baez, has been confirmed as a recurring character on the new show, at least for the first season.
Maria and Danny became a couple during the last season of Blue Bloods and are still together in Boston Blue. Now that Danny has moved to Massachusetts for a new job, they’ll be facing the challenges of a long-distance relationship, which is likely to create some drama in the show.
Boston Blue boasts a large ensemble cast alongside Mark Wahlberg, including Sonequa Martin-Green as Lena Silver, Ernie Hudson as Reverend Edwin Peters, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver, and Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver.
Boston Blue will release new episodes every Friday at 10:00 PM ET and 7:00 PM PT on CBS.
