Bosch: Start Of Watch, Young Harry Bosch’s Origin Story On MGM+

Fans of the Bosch universe have another series to look forward to: Bosch: Start of Watch, a prequel exploring the early days of Harry Bosch. This new show joins Bosch: Legacy and Ballard, and could potentially overshadow the character of Ballard within the franchise. The original Bosch, starring Titus Welliver, has spawned a surprisingly large collection of related stories.

Fans love both Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, and they essentially feel like one continuous story, showing Harry Bosch’s life both during and after his time as an LAPD detective. Ballard introduces a new character, Detective Renée Ballard (played by Maggie Q), and is a solid show in its own right, but feels separate from the main Bosch universe. The new series will likely make that separation even more noticeable.

MGM+’s New Bosch Show Won’t Star Titus Welliver

MGM+ is bringing back Harry Bosch in a new series called Bosch: Start of Watch. This show will be an origin story, revealing how Bosch first joined the LAPD and developed into the tough, witty, and skilled detective fans love.

The series Bosch is inspired by Michael Connelly’s novels, but the new show, Bosch: Start of Watch, features an entirely new story, with Connelly serving as a producer (according to Deadline). This story will focus on a younger Harry Bosch, played by a different actor than Titus Welliver.

Ballard Is Great, But Harry Bosch Is The Heart Of The Franchise

Ballard, the third series set in the world of Bosch, was quickly renewed for a second season after its July 2025 premiere. While the show is well-made and features a compelling performance by Maggie Q, like many spin-offs, it’s inevitably measured against the success of the original Bosch series.

The character Ballard feels similar to Harry Bosch, but operates independently. While Ballard was successful when Bosch wasn’t on the air, with the return of Bosch and the spin-off ‘Bosch: Legacy’, it might struggle to stand out. Hopefully, Amazon Prime will support both shows.

Harry Bosch Is In Good Hands

The biggest challenge with making Bosch: Start of Watch is the absence of Titus Welliver, who played Harry Bosch in the original series. Since Start of Watch features a younger Harry Bosch, around 26 years old, a new, younger actor was needed. Thankfully, Cameron Monaghan has been cast in the role.

Finding someone to fill Welliver’s shoes was always going to be difficult, but Monaghan is a strong choice. He’s well-known and liked by fans, and he’s already demonstrated his acting talent in shows like Shameless, Gotham, and Mercy Street. While no one can truly replace Welliver, especially in Bosch: Start of Watch, Monaghan is one of the best options we could have hoped for.
