‘Boots’ Producer Reveals Season 2 Plans for Canceled Series

The streaming service cancelled the comedy-drama Boots after just two months, and the show’s creators were as surprised as the fans. They had already started planning a second season, envisioning the characters moving from boot camp to active combat. Producer Brent Miller shared that creator Andy Parker had these plans in development. Despite the cancellation, the team behind Boots is hopeful they can find another platform to continue the series.

Miller shared with Variety:

I’m really thankful we got to create the show, and I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished. Our creator, Andy Parker, had planned for the characters to face wartime challenges in a second season.

The eight-part series Boots is inspired by Greg Cope White’s memoir, The Pink Marine, which detailed his life as a gay man serving in the military. While the book covered his experiences in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the series Boots is set in the 1990s.

‘Boots’ Marks the End of an Iconic Era

The show’s cancellation is disappointing for LGBTQ+ representation on television, but it also represents the end of a remarkable career. Norman Lear, the creator of classic sitcoms like All in the Family, Sanford and Son, and Maude, was a producer on the series until his death in 2023, making it his final project. Showrunner Miller discussed the show’s future and Lear’s involvement, while also noting the sad timing of the cancellation, coming so soon after the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner, a frequent collaborator with Lear.

Miller expressed:

Right now, Norman is understandably completely focused on the Reiners and their family. But if he’d known we were cancelling the show before their tragedy, I believe he would have been disappointed, but also grateful for the chance to have made it. He’d have been proud that the final show with his name on it resonated with so many people in Netflix’s 190 countries.

As a huge fan of the show, it was really heartening to hear that even knowing cancellations are just part of the business, the head of the studio was committed to doing everything he could to help our actors, writers, and producers land somewhere new. He really wanted to support them in finding a new home for the series. Plus, he’d absolutely encourage us fans to rally and make sure everyone knew we wanted a Season 2 – anywhere and anytime it could happen.

There’s been no explanation for why the show Boots was canceled, which is surprising considering its strong positive reception. Both critics and viewers loved it, as evidenced by its 90% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hopefully, Miller’s words will resonate with viewers and encourage them to rewatch the show after its cancellation. This renewed interest could also demonstrate enough support to convince another streaming service to consider making a second season.
