The next James Bond film is highly anticipated, but details are scarce. While we know a new movie is in the works, very little information has been released. Director Denis Villeneuve is set to take the helm, and Martin Campbell, who previously directed Bond films, has offered some guidance to help launch this new chapter for the iconic spy.
Thirty years ago, Martin Campbell directed Pierce Brosnan’s debut as James Bond in GoldenEye. Later, he also directed Daniel Craig’s first Bond film, Casino Royale. In a recent interview with Gold Derby, Campbell offered Denis Villeneuve straightforward (and somewhat colorful) advice: don’t overcomplicate things. He explained…
There’s no need to completely reinvent the Bond formula. What we really need is a strong, well-made Bond movie. Films like GoldenEye and Casino Royale still hold up today, so let’s not mess with what already works. There’s plenty of potential for fresh stories, especially given the current global landscape, but it’s important not to lose what makes Bond, Bond.
Although Goldeneye and Casino Royale are quite different films, they both clearly capture the essence of James Bond. This is probably what director Campbell means when he advises against changing a successful formula. There’s a fundamental structure that makes a Bond movie work, and straying too far from it could be risky.
It appears Campbell agrees that the next Bond film shouldn’t be a complete restart. There’s no need for a radically different approach as they begin this new chapter. However, the story itself will require a fresh start, since the previous James Bond is no longer alive.
New owners of the James Bond franchise, Amazon MGM, are facing a challenge as they plan the next chapter. The fact that Bond died in the previous film is proving difficult to navigate, though many viewers will likely be happy to simply enjoy a new Bond adventure regardless.
Denis Villeneuve is a proven and talented director, known for critically acclaimed films and currently working on an ambitious science fiction trilogy. However, it remains to be seen how his distinct style would translate to a James Bond film.
Rumors suggest the next James Bond film will feature a much younger 007 than we’re used to. However, the official search for the next actor to play Bond won’t really get underway until the script is finished.
