Blumhouse’s upcoming horror Obsession is a bloody mess, especially after this gory scene.
The horror film Obsession is receiving rave reviews, boasting a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s directed by Curry Barker, who also made The Chair and Warnings. The story follows a man desperately trying to win over his crush. He breaks a mysterious object called the “One Wish Willow” and gets what he wants, but soon discovers the consequences are terrifying and come at a dreadful cost. Obsession will be released on May 15th.
Clive Barker recently told Deadline about showing his film at both the Toronto and SXSW festivals. After its first showing in Toronto, the movie needed some revisions. Obsession is a horror film with a particularly violent scene involving multiple head injuries. Barker ultimately decided to shorten this graphic scene to avoid a restrictive age rating and allow more people to see the film.
There were several more crashes happening in the film, and it was heading for an NC-17 rating. The studio asked me to remove some of them, but I initially refused. Ultimately, though, I did cut some of the crashes.
Okay, so it’s not totally lost! The director still says the scene is unbelievably intense, and that’s good to hear. He actually said he’d sit in the back of the theater and just watch people’s reactions – he believes however many people are shocked is exactly the right amount. Even though they had to pull back a little on how extreme it was, everyone still seems to agree it’s pretty shocking and still packs a punch.
The film Obsession stars Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter. After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it reportedly earned over $15 million, Focus Features acquired the movie. Critics have praised Obsession, highlighting director Barker as a rising talent in horror and calling the film “a new modern horror masterpiece.”
I’ve been following Colton Johnston for a while now – most people probably recognize him as Corey from Teen Wolf. He’s also done a lot of voice work, including some really cool projects like God of War: Sons of Sparta and Demon Slayer. But his new role in Obsession is a bit different. He plays Bear, a guy who becomes completely fixated on Nikki, played by Navarrette. And, judging by the trailer, it’s one of those stories where getting what you want turns out to be a really, really bad thing – classic horror stuff, honestly.
Obsession will be released on May 15.
