Blumhouse has announced whether or not Brendan Fraser, known for his role in the original Mummy films, will be in the new horror remake directed by Lee Cronin.
A new horror film, directed by the creator of Evil Dead Rise, is bringing Universal’s The Mummy back to life. This reimagining of the classic horror series – one of the most beloved in movie history – will hit theaters on April 17th. The movie is written and directed by Cronin, and produced by well-known horror producers James Wan and Jason Blum.
Brendan Fraser became a worldwide star in 1999 when he played adventurer Rick O’Connell in Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy. This film was the first Mummy movie in over two decades, following the 1971 Hammer Horror film Blood From the Mummy’s Tomb. The Mummy was a major success in theaters, reviving the franchise, and Fraser went on to star in two more popular sequels.
Following rumors that Brendan Fraser might be in the new Mummy film directed by Lee Cronin, Blumhouse officially confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that he will not be appearing in the movie. The studio posted a clear message stating, “BRENDAN FRASER IS NOT IN LEE CRONIN’S THE MUMMY,” ending speculation about his involvement in the reboot.
I saw the tweet, and it seemed pretty clear, but honestly, I’m wondering if it’s all a bit of a distraction. Maybe they’re trying to throw us off the scent of Brendan Fraser making a surprise appearance! Still, thinking about it, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy sounds genuinely scary – a real horror movie. That’s so different from the fun, action-packed, and comedic tone of the original Fraser movies. Because of that, I’m starting to think we probably won’t see Rick O’Connell show up after all.
Blumhouse will probably aim to make their film a distinct horror experience, separate from the popular 90s and 2000s franchise. While Cronin’s movie has the potential to become successful and even launch its own series, it’s best if it avoids the lighter, more family-oriented tone of the previous films. That way, both franchises can thrive independently.
Although Rick O’Connell isn’t currently part of Lee Cronin’s The Mummy reboot, there’s hope for Brendan Fraser to reprise the role in a fourth Mummy film. Reports indicate The Mummy 4 is in early development, with the directors of Scream 5, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, attached to the project. Both Fraser and his co-star, Rachel Weisz, are said to be committed to appearing in the movie.
