The saying that lightning never strikes twice often holds true, and the Blair Witch Project is a prime example. The original 1999 film revolutionized horror with its found-footage style, scaring a generation and earning a lot of money for how little it cost to make. However, the sequels – Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000) and Blair Witch (2016) – didn’t live up to the original’s success, failing to impress both audiences and critics who had very high expectations.
Despite past failures, studios haven’t given up on the idea and are hoping a fresh project will revitalize it. Last year, reports surfaced that Lionsgate and Blumhouse were developing another new version, though details were scarce. Now, Dread Central has confirmed that filmmaker Dylan Clark will direct. Clark is known for his short films, Transfigure and Portrait of God.
We don’t yet know what the movie is about. It’s currently uncertain whether it will continue the story from the previous films as a third sequel, or if it will be a completely new version of the idea.
The original film was directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, and featured Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard. The story centers around these three actors playing documentary filmmakers investigating the legend of the Blair Witch in Burkittsville, Maryland. Instead of a typical scripted movie, the directors gave the actors minimal direction and backstory, encouraging improvisation. Myrick and Sánchez themselves created the frightening events happening around the actors, who were unaware of what was really going on.
The movie’s success was boosted by a clever marketing strategy. It launched just as the internet was becoming widely used, and the campaign deliberately made it seem like The Blair Witch Project wasn’t a movie at all, but real found footage. While films like Cannibal Holocaust and The Last Broadcast had tried similar tactics earlier, they hadn’t achieved widespread popularity.

After the first film became a huge hit, a sequel quickly followed in 2000. It went back to more standard filmmaking techniques, but still tried to capture some of the original’s mystical vibe. Then, fast forward to 2016, and Adam Wingard – the guy who later directed Godzilla vs. Kong – gave us a really interesting take with Blair Witch. He stripped things back to the found-footage style that made the first movie so scary, and the story focused on characters trying to finally solve the mystery of what happened to Heather all those years ago.
Although many film critics credit The Blair Witch Project with starting the found-footage trend of the last twenty years, Paranormal Activity was actually the more significant film in popularizing the genre. It was made for even less money and had a comparable impact, and because video cameras had become more accessible by the late 2000s, it spawned numerous copycat movies. While the Paranormal Activity franchise slowed down after the 2021 release of Next of Kin on Paramount+, reports suggest a new installment is in development.
