Black Phone 2 Rings Loudly In Its Box Office Opening Weekend While Tron: Ares Crashes And Derezzes

2025 has been a great year for horror films overall, but the Halloween season had been a little slow until recently. Although movies like Ryan Coogler’s *Sinners* and Zach Cregger’s *Weapons* were huge hits earlier in the year, the only major scary movie in the last few weeks was Michael Chaves’ *The Conjuring: Last Rites* (which did very well at the box office). Now, with the release of Scott Derrickson’s *Black Phone 2*, horror fans finally have a new fright to enjoy, and it’s already proving to be even more popular than the first *Black Phone* movie.

The latest horror movie performed very well this weekend, earning significantly more at the box office than both Joachim Rønning’s *Tron: Ares* and Aziz Ansari’s comedy *Good Fortune*. In fact, it made more than those two films combined. You can find the full box office numbers for the top 10 movies below, and I’ll share some analysis after that.

Black Phone 2 Outgrosses The Original’s Opening Weekend In Its Debut

Measuring a sequel’s success involves looking at various factors, and a strong indicator is how well it performs during its opening weekend. Ideally, a sequel should earn more than the original film, showing that the audience has expanded and there’s continued interest in the series. *Black Phone 2* achieved this over the past three days.

While the difference isn’t massive, the new horror film with Mason Thames and Ethan Hawke opened with $26.5 million, according to The Numbers. This is better than the $23.6 million debut of Scott Derrickson’s *The Black Phone* in 2022, and considering how well that film ultimately performed, it suggests this new movie will also be a hit.

Similar to many sequels, *Black Phone 2* cost more to make than the first *Black Phone* – Variety reports a $30 million budget. However, whether that extra cost pays off will depend on if it can earn as much or more at the box office. The original film brought in $161.4 million globally in theaters, with $90.1 million of that coming from the US and Canada.

The new movie has earned a total of $42 million worldwide, with $26.5 million coming from domestic sales and $15.5 million from international sales.

This win is especially important for Blumhouse, a studio known for making movies on small budgets. They’ve struggled with theatrical releases so far in 2025 – Leigh Whannell’s *Wolf Man* earned just $35 million worldwide in January, and other films like Jaume Collet-Serra’s *The Woman In The Yard*, Christopher Landon’s *Drop*, and Gerard Johnstone’s *M3GAN 2.0* haven’t performed well either.

Blumhouse seems to be getting back on track, and the initial box office results for *Black Phone 2* are encouraging. They also have *Five Nights at Freddy’s 2* coming out in early December, and this time, it won’t be available to stream on Peacock at the same time as its theatrical release, which should help boost ticket sales.

Halloween’s coming up in just under two weeks, and I’m really curious to see how *Black Phone 2* does at the box office as we get closer. I’m wondering if the holiday will give it a nice boost in ticket sales!

Tron: Ares Suffers A Rough Weekend-To-Weekend Drop Following Its Tough Premiere

I’m really happy to hear *Black Phone 2* is doing well at the box office! It’s fantastic news. But unfortunately, things aren’t looking good for *Tron: Ares*. It didn’t have a great opening weekend to begin with, and now it’s dropped off even more – a really tough result, especially when you compare it to the first *Tron* film. It’s disappointing to see.

Despite costing a reported $180 million to make, *Tron: Ares* had a disappointing opening weekend, earning only $33.2 million – less than expected. It continued to struggle, bringing in just $11.1 million over the following three days. This represents a steep 66% drop and suggests the future of the *Tron* series is uncertain.

So far, *Tron: Ares* has earned $54.6 million in the US and $103 million globally. It’s looking unlikely to reach the $400 million that *Tron: Legacy* made, mainly because *Legacy* faced little competition when it was released in early 2011. The new film, coming out in 2025, will have to compete with many other highly anticipated movies also releasing in November.

Despite A Talented Cast, Good Fortune Doesn’t Manage To Reinvigorate Big Screen Comedy

This weekend, alongside *Black Phone 2*, the new comedy *Good Fortune* also debuted, but like *Tron: Ares* (though to a lesser extent), it didn’t perform well in theaters. Despite featuring stars like Aziz Ansari, Keanu Reeves, and Seth Rogen, the film received lukewarm reviews and ultimately didn’t attract many viewers.

Despite being shown in almost 3,000 theaters across the country this weekend, the movie *Good Fortune* only earned $6.2 million. This isn’t a strong result – it ranks as the 66th largest opening weekend of 2025, falling behind *The Roses* which came out in late August. Considering the film cost around $30 million to make, the box office numbers are disappointing.

The box office had a somewhat unpredictable weekend, but things could pick up next week! Several new movies are coming out, including the anime film *Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc*, the romance *Regretting You*, and the documentary *Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere*. It should make for a diverse selection at the cinema. Check back with TopMob next Sunday to see the updated Top 10 list.
