Ryan Coogler’s latest Black Panther movie marks a significant moment for the franchise. Coming after the planned Avengers: Secret Wars film, there’s a lot of discussion about who will play T’Challa, following the passing of Chadwick Boseman.
Marvel Studios has officially registered ‘Fragment Productions LLC’ as the company handling production of Black Panther 3. This filing, visible on the SAG-AFTRA website, indicates the movie is now in active development and a 2028 release date is looking more and more probable.
Marvel Studios has updated its movie schedule for 2028 and 2029, reserving dates on May 5th, July 28th, and December 15th in 2028, and May 4th and July 13th in 2029. Since work on Black Panther 3 started before the new X-Men movie, May 5, 2028, is the most likely release date for the next Black Panther film, directed by Ryan Coogler.
In the next two years, Marvel Studios is planning to release just two movies: Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Sony Pictures will be primarily responsible for making and releasing the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day film.
Currently, only two Marvel movies have confirmed directors after the Avengers saga: Black Panther 3 and the upcoming reboot of X-Men, which Jake Schreier is directing. This makes both films likely candidates to be released in 2028, though their specific release dates are still to be determined.

Because the upcoming Secret Wars is predicted to significantly change the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther 3 has many possible storylines it could take. The events of Secret Wars might even introduce a completely new version of T’Challa, likely played by a different actor.
With a new Black Panther already planned, it’s highly probable that characters like Shuri and M’Baku, who are currently important leaders in Wakanda, will also be featured in the film.
The biggest rumor surrounding villains for the next Black Panther movie focuses on Denzel Washington. Sources suggest that Washington may play Achebe, a character with a deep connection to Wakanda, and that director Ryan Coogler is writing the part specifically for him as the film’s main antagonist.
Achebe differs from past Wakandan villains who were motivated by beliefs or revenge. He isn’t interested in traditional conquest; instead, he embodies pure chaos and poses a threat to Wakanda’s foundations and sense of self, making him a uniquely dangerous enemy.
Angela Bassett hinted that her character, Queen Ramonda, might reappear through the Ancestral Plane, offering a way to continue Shuri’s story emotionally, as she’s currently lost all her family in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Ancestral Plane has been important in both Black Panther movies directed by Ryan Coogler, making its return likely.
