Netflix has become known for its cyberpunk shows, but that might change when Apple TV+ releases its Neuromancer series. Netflix already had success with anime like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and sci-fi collections such as Love, Death + Robots and Black Mirror, which sometimes explore cyberpunk themes. However, back in 2018, Netflix released a truly exceptional cyberpunk series that deserves a rediscovery. It’s so captivating, you’ll be hooked from the start.
As a huge sci-fi fan, I was really excited when Netflix adapted Richard Morgan’s Altered Carbon novels. They cast Joel Kinnaman – who I thought was great in Suicide Squad – as the lead, and it totally delivered on the cyberpunk aesthetic. Think neon-lit streets, incredible futuristic tech, and a really fascinating concept: what if you could achieve a kind of immortality by transferring your consciousness? The story also has this cool thread of rebels fighting against a super-rich, powerful elite, which just adds another layer to everything. Honestly, Altered Carbon is a fantastic show if you’re into that kind of thing.
Taking place centuries in the future, the series centers on Takeshi Kovacs, a rebel who is brought back to life in a new body by a wealthy man. This man hires Kovacs to investigate his own murder. Kovacs teams up with a skeptical police officer, Kristin Ortega, to solve the case and uncovers a dangerous secret in the process. The show boasts a strong ensemble cast, including Dichen Lachman, Chris Conner, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Will Yun Lee, Ato Essandoh, and James Purefoy.
‘Altered Carbon’ is the Perfect One-Season Sci-Fi Binge#
As a huge sci-fi fan, I devoured the first season of Altered Carbon in a weekend – it’s seriously gripping! Joel Kinnaman was fantastic as Takeshi Kovacs, but the show went through some changes. Honestly, if you love Season 1 and want more of the story, skip Season 2 and go straight for the original book. You’ll thank me later!
While the first season of Altered Carbon was reminiscent of Blade Runner, the second season feels more like amateur fan fiction. Anthony Mackie took over the lead role as Kovacs, but the show shifted away from the thoughtful, character-driven mystery of Season 1. Instead, it became a generic action series with uninspired fight scenes and a weak storyline. Though it has its supporters, Season 2 doesn’t come close to matching the high quality of the original.
Apple TV+ Is Introducing a New Cyberpunk Competitor

If you enjoyed Altered Carbon and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (and chances are, you’ll want to revisit Edgerunners!), you won’t have to wait long for Apple TV+’s new cyberpunk series. Based on the classic William Gibson novel, Neuromancer is poised to be the next major sci-fi show. With already successful sci-fi series like Severance and Silo, Apple TV+ is aiming for a hat trick with Neuromancer, which is scheduled for release in late 2026.
