Netflix has canceled the series, which received negative reviews when it first launched but surprisingly topped the streamer’s global charts in September. The Spanish dystopian show joins a growing list of Netflix programs that haven’t been renewed for a second season, lasting only one season.
Netflix has renewed the series Berlin for another season, but quietly canceled Billionaires‘ Bunker (originally titled El refugio atómico) in Spain, according to Spanish news source El País. The show centered around a group of wealthy individuals seeking shelter in a high-tech bunker during World War III. However, old conflicts between two families within the bunker threatened to disrupt their survival.
A major issue with Billionaires’ Bunker was that it felt too similar to other recent shows about the end of the world. Critics and viewers heavily criticized it for poor acting and unoriginal writing. Many also found it resembled a low-budget soap opera version of shows like Silo, Paradise, and Fallout.
The show’s ending leaves viewers with unanswered questions, joining the list of stories cut short by cancellations. However, given the show’s lackluster reviews and quick disappearance from popular viewings, its cancellation isn’t likely to be the biggest surprise of the year.
‘Billionaires’ Bunker’ Had High Ambitions

Netflix
There was a lot of initial excitement surrounding Billionaires’ Bunker. Diego Ávalos, Netflix’s VP of Content for Spain, even claimed it was the most ambitious series ever made in Spain.
When the first season was released, the creators of the show – Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, also known for Money Heist – hinted that a second season would be even more intense.
We’ve already brainstormed how to kick things off again, especially since we needed a plan for the season finale. We have some ideas for what happens right after, and even some thoughts on raising the stakes and getting more intense. However, we haven’t yet figured out the overall structure for Season 2.
I have to admit, while Billionaires’ Bunker managed a respectable top five showing on Netflix’s list of Spanish-language titles – racking up 14 million views in its first two weeks – it ultimately didn’t have the staying power to justify a second season. It was bested by hits like Two Graves, The Gardener and the Money Heist spin-off Berlin (which was a massive success with over 33 million views). Despite a decent initial run, it only stayed in the global Top 10 for about 20 days and hung onto the Spanish charts for 36 days, which unfortunately isn’t enough to warrant further investment.
