‘Big Little Lies’ Season 3 Puts HBO’s Emmy-winning Thriller in Jeopardy Once Again

The HBO show Big Little Lies was a hit, keeping viewers hooked with its intriguing murder mystery and compelling characters. However, a recent development regarding Season 3 has some fans worried that the show might be repeating a past error. While HBO hasn’t announced when the new season will premiere, the update has left audiences feeling uneasy.

A lot of fans feel the first season of Big Little Lies was the perfect ending. The show was initially intended as a limited series, adapting Liane Moriarty’s novel, but its quick success led HBO to create a second season. Now that Moriarty is writing a sequel novel, viewers are questioning whether a third season of the show will happen.

‘Big Little Lies’ Author Liane Moriarty Announces a New Book

Liane Moriarty has a new book, Big Little Truths, coming out in August. It takes place in the same world as Big Little Lies and will be the basis for the show’s third season, potentially giving fans a release date soon. However, some readers and viewers are hesitant about the author writing a book specifically to become a season of the show. This isn’t entirely new, though – Moriarty previously wrote a 50,000-word story for Season 2 after strong demand from viewers and HBO following the success of the first season.

This short novel hasn’t been released to the public; currently, only HBO has access to it. Within its pages, Moriarty first developed the character of Mary Louise and several storylines that appear in Season 2 of Big Little Lies. She originally wrote the character with Meryl Streep in mind, which was exciting for her. However, despite this, she initially conceived of the character and her story as a written piece, even though it eventually became a televised adaptation.

Although season two of Big Little Lies wasn’t bad, it didn’t quite live up to the quality of the first season. Many viewers felt the adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s new work felt hurried, which was especially disappointing considering the two-year wait for season two was due to waiting for Moriarty to finish writing the story. While adaptations of books are common, it was unusual for a short story to be written specifically as the basis for a TV show.

The new book, Big Little Truths, comes out in August, and fans are wondering if this will push back the release of Big Little Lies Season 3. It’s possible. This time, however, readers will have a chance to read the book before the new season airs, which means spoilers are likely to surface. While the show might not follow every detail from the book—that would be unusual for HBO—author Liane Moriarty has been an executive producer since the beginning. Hopefully, she’s had enough time to develop the story from Big Little Truths and ensure it translates well to the screen.
