Taylor Sheridan has quickly become a powerhouse in television since he first appeared on Walker, Texas Ranger. While he’s now famous as the writer, producer, and director behind popular shows like Yellowstone and Lioness, Sheridan actually began his career as an actor in several successful TV series during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Sheridan started gaining recognition with a role on a CW teen drama where he played Danny Boyd, a criminal. Though not his very first acting credit, it was the first time he played a recurring character. He went on to land larger parts in shows like Sons of Anarchy, but his work as Boyd was a key moment that helped launch his career.
Veronica Mars Mixed High School Drama and Mystery With Noir
Premiering in 2004, Veronica Mars stood out from typical teen dramas of the time. The show centers on Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell), a high school student who moonlights as a private investigator after her best friend, Lilly Kane (Amanda Seyfried), is murdered. Alongside her friends and detective father, Veronica takes on cases for her classmates, all while continuing to investigate Lilly’s death.
As a true crime fan, I love how each season of the show tackles a completely new mystery. Season one was all about figuring out who killed Lilly, then season two dove into the aftermath of a terrible school bus accident. Season three got really heavy, dealing with sexual assaults at Veronica’s college, Hearst University. But what’s cool is that while there’s this big case each season, Veronica’s always juggling smaller, individual mysteries on the side too.
I’ve noticed that Veronica Mars reminds me a lot of The X-Files. It often has that “case of the week” feel. Veronica’s usually helping her dad with his detective work, or she’s getting pulled into mysteries by people at school – like when a friend got involved with a cult, or she was trying to figure out why some athletes were failing drug tests. It’s a fun format!
Veronica Mars is a classic teen detective story, much like Nancy Drew. While both shows feature mystery and investigation, Veronica Mars explored more mature themes, appealing to a broader range of viewers.
I was really struck by the show’s classic film noir style – it reminded me of those old detective movies, with Veronica frequently shown sneaking around in cars or working in her dad’s office. It’s a teen drama for sure, but those moments felt timeless and gave it a really unique detective feel that set it apart from everything else I’ve seen lately.
Veronica Mars Became One of The CW’s Most Popular Shows
Although it was a popular show on The CW, it was canceled in 2007 because of low viewership. However, the show’s creator, Rob Thomas, and star, Kristen Bell, didn’t want to let it go. In 2013, they teamed up with other cast and crew members to launch a Kickstarter campaign, hoping to raise money for a movie based on the series.
The Veronica Mars movie was fully funded in less than eleven hours, becoming the most successful film project and the third most successful project overall on Kickstarter. Released in 2014, the movie brought back Kristen Bell as Veronica Mars and other beloved characters to Neptune to investigate a new murder. Although it didn’t quite recoup its $6 million production cost—earning just over $3 million worldwide—the film was well-received by both critics and fans of the original television series.
Just when it seemed the show had ended, it returned for a fourth season in 2019. This new season followed Veronica as she investigated a series of spring break bombings in her hometown of Neptune. The revival brought back many beloved characters from the original series, alongside some fresh faces. Although it only had eight episodes, the season was a hit with critics and audiences alike, earning an impressive 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Veronica returned briefly, but the show was canceled just as quickly. Despite a successful revival and a new movie, Hulu decided not to renew the series. This came as a surprise to viewers, particularly because of the season’s cliffhanger ending. However, the actors and people who made the show haven’t completely dismissed the possibility of returning to the story in the future.
Dick Casablancas has often stated the cast would be eager to return if the chance came up. However, with no current plans and Hulu passing on continuing the show, Veronica Mars is currently on hold. Still, considering the show’s history of surprising comebacks, it’s likely we haven’t seen the last of her.
Taylor Sheridan Played a Recurring Role as Criminal Danny Boyd
Taylor Sheridan is now famous as the creator of shows like Yellowstone, 1883, and Landman, but he actually began his career as an actor. He first appeared in shows like Walker, Texas Ranger, taking on small, one-episode parts in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His first significant role came with Veronica Mars, where he played Danny Boyd in the show’s second season.
Boyd was Liam Fitzpatrick’s cousin and worked with him as part of the Fitzpatrick mafia. He first appeared in the episode “Ahoy, Mateys!” and played a key role in the investigation surrounding Thomas Griffith (Rick Peters), a plastic surgeon who was set to testify against Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) in the murder case of Felix Toombs, a member of a biker gang.
Veronica’s investigation reveals the doctor was previously disciplined for performing surgery without permission. This leads her to Danny Boyd, who says the doctor stitched him up after a fight. However, Boyd is connected to the powerful Fitzpatrick family, who are suspected of involvement with a dangerous motorcycle gang and the death of Felix. Later, in the show’s second season, Sheridan returns to explore the bus crash and Felix’s murder, with the investigation repeatedly focusing on the Fitzpatricks.
Though initially a smaller part, Sheridan’s character Boyd helped him land more consistent roles on popular TV shows. He later played Hale, the Deputy Chief of Police in Charming, a more significant character involved in major plotlines until his character’s death in the third season.
Taylor Sheridan began focusing on creating shows like Yellowstone in 2018, but he didn’t stop acting. He appeared in Yellowstone as Travis Wheatley throughout its five seasons. He also took on roles in his other series, portraying historical figure Charles Goodnight in a couple of episodes of 1883 and Cody Spears, a Delta Force operative, in Lioness.
I was so bummed when Veronica Mars ended, but it really was one of the best shows The CW ever put out. Seeing it come back in 2019, even for a short time, just reminded me – and so many other fans – why we adored Veronica and her investigations in Neptune. It’s clear the show meant a lot to everyone involved, and I truly believe the mysteries of Neptune will always be remembered as something special in television history.
I remember when Rob Sheridan first appeared in Veronica Mars – it felt like the beginning of something really special for him, and it clearly launched his career in TV and film. Now, looking at the massive success of Yellowstone, all its spin-offs, and the buzz around Landman, everyone – including me – is totally wondering what he’s going to do next. He’s proven he can act and create, so the possibilities feel endless!
