I’ve been following Batman for a long time, and his latest story really surprised me – he just adopted a former villain into the Wayne family! Honestly, it makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Batman’s always believed in the potential for good in everyone, and he’s taken in so many people over the years, trying to help them. So, seeing him extend that to someone who used to be a villain? It’s not as crazy as it sounds, and actually feels pretty in character for him.

It’s unusual for Batman to adopt a former villain, and for good reason – most of his enemies are too old to be adopted, and he already has plenty of adopted children and sidekicks. However, the upcoming 2025 Batman movie explores this possibility, bringing a reformed villain into the Wayne family.

Batman’s New Show Sees Him Adopt A Notable DC Villain Throughout Its Story

The show, called ‘Bat-Fam,’ centers around Batman and the characters connected to him. While it draws from the comics, not all of Batman’s closest allies appear. Only one Robin, Damian Wayne, has a significant role. However, Batman takes in a new character, Claire Selton, who also goes by Volcana, expanding his family within the series.

Volcana has been a DC Comics villain for quite some time, typically known as a foe of Superman, not Batman. That’s what makes her central role in the Bat-Fam series so unexpected. Even more surprising is that instead of appearing as her usual adult self, she’s portrayed as a troubled teenager named Claire, who Batman takes in and makes part of the Wayne family.

Okay, so the movie actually explains what happened with Volcana. Apparently, she was in a really bad accident, almost died, and the Bat-Family used something called the Lazarus Pits to save her. These pits are powerful, but they had a weird side effect – they not only healed her, but also made her younger, and she lost most of her memories from when she was a supervillain. It’s a clever way to rewrite her character, honestly.

Bringing a reformed supervillain with unpredictable fire powers into the Bat-Family is a bold choice for Batman, but it greatly benefits the story of Bat-Fam. It adds a compelling layer to the series’ unique family dynamic, and Volcana’s storyline is central to the show’s success.

Batman Adopting A Child Supervillain Is So Perfect I’m Surprised The Storyline Hasn’t Been Used More

At first, Claire’s character feels a little out of place in the Batman cartoon. But her storyline actually does a great job of showing Batman’s compassionate side, making him a particularly likable hero. It also nicely connects the show’s focus on Batman’s relationships with the stories of other villains who are trying to turn their lives around.

It’s really touching to see Batman trying to guide and support Claire, acting as a mentor and father figure. Watching Damian attempt to connect with her as a brother, despite their many differences, is also great. Learning about Volcana’s difficult past makes you want to see Claire succeed and have a better life this time around, considering everything she’s been through.

Batman has a history of working with former villains, so it feels natural – and almost expected – that he’d take in a reformed young villain as part of his extended family, the ‘Bat-Fam’. It’s a storyline that fits so well, it’s surprising we haven’t seen it explored more often in DC comics and shows. The current series could potentially develop this idea further if it gets a second season.
